Architects and Engineers Association Hamburg

The Architects and Engineers Association Hamburg (AIV Hamburg) is an association of architects and engineers in the construction industry. The aim is to provide critical support and support for the development of building culture in the city of Hamburg. It was founded in 1859. The association supports the cooperation and exchange of the various disciplines for the planning and building architects and engineers through specialist publications, awards, exhibitions and events.

Freelancers, tradespeople and public service employees are organized in the AIV. Martin Haller was already a member of the AIV (and even its chairman from 1876 to 1884) and also Fritz Schumacher. The AIV Hamburg is organized in the Association of German Architects and Engineers' Associations (DAI).

Since 1868, the AIV has published the volume "Hamburg and its buildings" every fifteen years.

Specialist publications

The AIV supports and publishes various publications on important topics, e.g. B. “The great fire and the reconstruction of Hamburg” (1892), “Storm surges and flood protection in Hamburg” (1962), “Construction between art and convention”. (1994).

public events

The AIV organizes lectures, discussions, visits and exhibitions on an ongoing basis. The 2006 exhibition “Hamburg and its bridges” in the Hamburg City Hall deserves special mention.

Building of the year

Every year since 1979, the AIV has awarded the "Building of the Year" award to outstanding Hamburg new buildings and urban development facilities that were completed in the previous year. A bronze plaque designed by Thomas Darboven will be attached to the buildings . The award is presented three to six times a year.

Chateauneuf Medal

This award was created in 1999 on the occasion of the 200th birthday of Alexis de Chateauneuf . Since then, the AIV has given it to personalities and institutions without a fixed rhythm. The award goes to individuals or voluntary institutions who have worked in a special way and with great personal commitment for buildings and projects that shape the cityscape. The medal was created by the Hamburg metal sculptor Winnie Schaak .

School and job

The AIV promotes young talent and is in close contact with the universities of architecture and civil engineering. The AIV supports the award of the student competition “Architecture and Civil Engineering Prize Hamburg”.

Festival of architects and engineers

The AIV organizes a festive ball every year.

The board of directors is based on the statutes of the Architects and Engineers Association Hamburg e. V. elected at regular intervals by its members. Currently (September 2018) the board and committees of the AIV Hamburg are composed as follows:
