Initially interested primarily in abstract art, Darboven now also created figurative works and was involved in architectural projects. He won several prizes in public competitions. Among other things, he and the Hamburg architect Reiner Steffen received third prize in the “Brahms Memorial for Hamburg” competition in 1979 and his Brahms cube was erected two years later on the square in front of the Laeiszhalle . Three of his abstract sculptures, which can be found in the Reinbeck palace gardens , were created as part of the annual exhibition “Artwork - Werkkunst” organized by Normann and Bärbel Müller-Rousseau. Some of Darboven's works were financed as art in architecture by SAGA , to be found in the districts of Allermöhe , Altona , Altstadt , Hummelsbüttel and Neustadt .
