geography

Neighboring districts

Sasel is surrounded by Poppenbüttel (west), Lemsahl-Mellingstedt (north), Bergstedt and Volksdorf (east), Farmsen-Berne (south-east) and Wellingsbüttel and Bramfeld (south).

history

The Mellingburg was built between 700 and 800 . The village was first mentioned in a document as "Sasle" in 1293, but it is likely to be considerably older. The name can be traced back to an Old Saxon compound from the defining word saws for "stone" and the basic word loh for "grove", "clearing". Later written forms of the name are "Satzel", "Sazel", "Sasell", "Saßell", "Saeßell", "Sahsell", "Saßel" and finally "Sasel".

The street name Beim Riesenstein marks the location of an Ice Age boulder , which may be associated with pre-Christian cults. This was blown up in the 19th century and the rubble was used for bridge foundation work along today's Saseler Chaussee (bridge over the Saselbek ).

A route of the Königsweg between Hamburg and Lübeck leads just past the place. In contrast to several villages in the area (Wellingsbüttel, Tangstedt , Woldenhorn / Ahrensburg ), which came under manorial rule since the 16th century, Sasel - like other Geestrand villages - always remained a farming village. Historically, it is part of the Stormarn landscape . Politically and administratively, it has belonged to the "ducal portion" of Holstein (the Duchy of Schleswig-] Holstein-Gottorp) since the late Middle Ages and, since its dissolution in 1771, to the entire Danish state. In 1864/67 the province of Schleswig-Holstein became part of Prussia and in 1937 numerous other Stormarn villages became part of Hamburg ( Greater Hamburg Law ).

In comparison to the neighboring villages and today's Hamburg districts, the early (starting from around 1920), planned settlement of the Feldmark with originally self-sufficient settler properties, which shaped the district until the 1980s, but now largely in very small building plots with corresponding Building density have been crushed.

religion

The Vicelinkirche, Saseler Markt

Ecclesiastically, Sasel has belonged to the Bergstedt parish (church 2 km north) since the high Middle Ages. Around the middle of the 20th century, first a separate pastorate and then in 1948 a separate parish were set up, which was divided again in 1963 (reunited in 1998). In the center of the village, at Saseler Markt, the Vicelinkirche was built in 1962 (architects Sandtmann / Grundmann ). The Lukaskirche (architect Eckert-von Holst) in southern Sasel, consecrated in 1965, is one of the great achievements of modern church construction in northern Elbe .

The Catholic Church for Sasel is St. Bernard in Poppenbüttel .

The Sasel volunteer fire brigade was founded on April 1st, 1883 and is based at Saseler Parkweg 1, right next to the Sasel house. The fire brigade consists of around 30 comrades who volunteer to avert danger in the district and also organize various events such as the traditional Easter fire or the popular open day. In order to actively support the citizens of Sasel and Hamburg in the future, we are always looking for new members who should live or work in Sasel.

The professional fire brigade is also represented in Sasel. The Sasel fire and rescue station (F24) in Saseler Kamp is home to a Hamburg fire engine (short), an equipment vehicle, four ambulances and an ambulance vehicle.

Culture and sights

Buildings

Lukaskirche, Auf der Heide 15

The town center is the Saseler Markt with the Vicelinkirche . The weekly market takes place here on Thursday and Saturday mornings. The building of the former Sasel town hall, which is still preserved today, was the district's book hall in the 1980s; The building has been renovated since the early 1990s and now houses an American-style restaurant.

The district is characterized by quiet, green residential streets with predominantly single and semi-detached houses. Since many of the single houses were built on large plots in the 1950s, both the district and young families are currently benefiting from the concept of the growing city , as some of the old houses in dense development are being replaced by modern, energy-saving double houses. The shredding also meets with criticism, however, since the Sasel townscape, which is characterized by the North German Heimatstil, is strongly threatened by the dense development with prefabricated houses on minimal plots.

Settlement house Op de Elg 29 by Fritz Höger

A prominent feature of the district is Ring 3, an important connecting road that cuts through the northern part of Hamburg. The expansion of the ring is no longer planned.

Architectural monuments are:

  • Lukaskirche , Auf der Heide 15 (built 1965)
  • Vicelinkirche, Saseler Markt 8 (built 1961–62)
  • Edge development of the market (brick buildings in the 'Schumacher or Höger style'), u. a. the post office building (Saseler Markt 22) with the (heavily built-up) central town hall, 1920s / 1930s
  • Settlement houses, Op de Elg 21 (single-family house), 23 & 25, 27 & 29 (each semi-detached) designed and built by the architect Fritz Höger in the years 1921–22 .
  • Landhaus, Saselbergweg 15 (built 1913)
  • Landhaus, Saselbergweg 29 (built 1922)
  • Residential building, Mellingburgredder 1
  • Lock, Mellingburgredder 1
  • Residential building, Mellingburgredder 8 (built 1968)
  • House, Mellingburgredder 11 (built 1907-08 by Timmerman, Ad.)
  • Thatched cottage, Mellingburgredder 19 (built 1866). The former lock keeper's house with a view over the Alster is one of the first private houses in the Alstertal. During the renovation and extension work, the original building fabric was largely preserved.

Parks

The Sasel House is located near the Saseler Markt and was set up in the barn of the former estate (and later school). The former estate park stretches to the stepped back federal highway 434 , the Saseler Chaussee.

Natural monuments

In the north of Sasel, the Hainesch / Iland nature reserve begins with the Saselbek brook , which is dammed up at the old mill . It stretches to the east - interrupted by picturesque horse paddocks - into the even more rural Hamburg district of Bergstedt .

In the west of Sasel on the border with Poppenbüttel there is good access to the Alsterwanderweg .

In the center of Sasel is the Schubert linden tree, which was planted in November 1928 in memory of Franz Schubert. Today, since 2006, a memorial stone and a bench created by Thomas Darboven have adorned the memorial square, and every year in October the people of Sasel celebrate a festival with lots of singing.

music

Since September 12, 2010 there has been an Elbkinderland place-name sign on the Sasel market square, which was unveiled by the district office manager Cornelia Schroeder-Piller and the patron Rolf Zuckowski . The Elbkinderland association distinguishes cities and municipalities as particularly Elbkinder-friendly, which are committed to the musical promotion of children.
