The Mellingburg , also called Mellenburg , is an abandoned Niederungsburg ( Erdhügelburg (Motte)) on the neck of a peninsula near the Mellingburger Schleuse in the Alstertal in Hamburg-Sasel .
The Mellingburg, whose owners are not documented, was founded between 700 and 800 AD to protect against Norman incursions. It served as a people's refuge as early as the 9th century. After the city of Hamburg had grown further, it was expanded into a large refuge to protect against raids by the Danes and Slavs .
The former castle complex of the type of a motte had a main castle , which was separated from an outer castle by two small walls . Its main wall was ten feet high.
Today the Alsterwanderweg leads past the Burgstall (castle site), which shows only small remains and traces of terrain .
