Old Mill (Saselbek)

Old mill (Saselbek) in winter

The old mill on the border between Sasel and Bergstedt used the water power of the dammed Saselbek shortly before its confluence with the Alster. The traffic jam at the nearby Mellingburg lock was often a point of contention between the miller or his authorities and the Hamburg forest gentlemen, most recently in 1875.

Based on the name, a mill at this location can be assumed to exist before 1453, as the nearby Rodenbeker mill was first mentioned under this date. It has been proven since the 16th century. In the Thirty Years War it was a powder mill, then a coin and since 1695 it has been used as a grain mill with compulsory grinding (until 1865) for the villages of Bramfeld , Steilshoop , Alsterdorf , Meiendorf and Oldenfelde . A break in the Mühlendamm with the subsequent reconstruction of the building is known to have occurred in 1735. The mill has been owned by the Timmermann family since 1750.

After a fire in 1880, the mill building with the adjoining living area, which was also used as a restaurant from the start, was rebuilt from yellow bricks from Trillup with red decorative bricks. Both components are separated by a central projection.

The external water wheel was replaced by a turbine back in the 1920s , which has been generating electricity again since 1997 after being repaired. Mill operations no longer take place.

From 1926, the restaurant for the waiting mealtimes became a well-known excursion restaurant with a beer garden on Mühlendamm.

The entire complex consisting of the mill building, the adjoining house on Bergstedt side, the cottage on the Mühlendamm, which is now used as a guest room for private parties, the path paved with boulders over the Mühlendamm and the reservoir with the adjacent parcels are listed. “Taken alone, the individual components do not claim to be listed as a historical monument. When they come together, however, a historically grown and, for today's viewer, extremely idyllic pictorial unity comes about, the preservation of which is a characteristic part of the cityscape in the public interest. "

The banks of the mill pond are largely part of the Hainesch / Iland nature reserve .
