Geographical location

Meiendorf is the northernmost of several districts in the Rahlstedt district. Meiendorf is limited in the north by the Volksdorfer Wald , in the west by the border with Farmsen-Berne in the south by Oldenfelde and in the east by the state border between Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein .

geology

Meiendorf's eastern half has a hilly formation and serpentine tunnel valleys that were created by the meltwater flows of the glaciers from the Vistula Ice Age around 12,000 years ago. The melted glaciers left behind rubble and debris, some of which were deposited into steep walls, the Osers .

Subdivision breakdown

Meiendorf is mixed in terms of the housing stock. The north of Meiendorf consists mostly of single houses of different ages. The west and the center of the district have multi-storey social housing from the 1960s. The south and the middle consist mainly of multi-storey houses, although there are also individual houses from the Wilhelminian era, especially near the old village center. The east of Meiendorf is only sparsely populated, there are two nature reserves .

prehistory

In the 1930s, sensational discoveries and excavations made Meiendorf's Stellmoorer Tunneltal world famous among prehistoric researchers. Finds of flint tools, animal head engravings and equipment of all kinds made from reindeer antlers and bones document that around 14,000 to 16,000 years ago nomads followed the herds of reindeer to the edge of the icy zone, they hunted and had a camp site in the area of today's Meiendorf. At that time, Meiendorf consisted of tundra steppe .

Middle Ages and Modern Times

Meiendorf was first mentioned in a document in 1318. At that time it was a Holstein farming village. From 1333 it was largely owned by the Hamburg cathedral chapter. In 1576 it belonged again to Holstein, namely to the Trittau office . From 1750 to 1753, Holstein pledged it to Hamburg. In 1927 it was incorporated into Rahlstedt. In 1937 Meiendorf came to Hamburg together with Rahlstedt under the Greater Hamburg Act .

Natural monuments

Stellmoorer tunnel valley

The approximately 202 hectare Stellmoorer Tunneltal was placed under nature protection by the ordinance on the nature reserve Stellmoorer Tunneltal of March 28, 1978.

The Hamburg part of the neighboring, about 543 hectare Höltigbaum area is also under nature protection by the ordinance on the Höltigbaum nature reserve of May 26, 1998, the part in the Schleswig-Holstein area since 1997. In 1937 the Wehrmacht set up a parade ground here . In 1958 the Bundeswehr took over the site as a training area. Even then, a shepherd kept the meadows free with his flock. Not using fertilizers or pesticides made it possible for many rare animals and plants to survive. In 1995 the Bundeswehr gave up the Höltigbaum as a training area.

Both nature reserves, with their lush and varied hilly landscapes created in the Vistula Ice Age, offer walkers, cyclists and riders a special recreational value.

Sports

The Meiendorfer sports club is particularly well known in Hamburg for its soccer department.

Meiendorfer Straße, which is partly built with old villas, forms a section of Bundesstraße 75 from Hamburg to Lübeck . This street was inaugurated in 1843 with avenue trees and was considered the most modern road to Lübeck. The almost two meter high Danish milestone from 1843 on the corner of Hellmesbergerweg still testifies to this. At that time, many farmers moved their farm buildings to the road. From 1904 to 1923, the small electric train ran through the Chaussee from Altrahlstedt via Volksdorf to Wohldorf . As early as the 18th century, a toll road connected Meiendorf with Ahrensfelde, where the name "Höltigbaum" for the area in between comes from; Höltigbaum means holding or turnpike. Today Meiendorf is connected to other parts of the city by MetroBus 24 (Rahlstedt-Meiendorf-Volksdorf- Sasel - Poppenbüttel - Fuhlsbüttel - Niendorf ). The Lübeck – Hamburg railway line , on which the RE 8 / RE 80 lines run to Lübeck and the RB 81 to Bad Oldesloe , cross Meiendorf. The U1 runs along the Meiendorfer border ; The Berne and Meiendorfer Weg underground stations are nearby .
