The U- and S-Bahn station Wandsbeker Chaussee is a junction of the Hamburg rapid transit network on the border between the Hamburg districts of Eilbek and Wandsbek on the street of the same name . It consists of two structurally and operationally separate stations for the S-Bahn lines S1 and S11 and the underground line U1 .
S-Bahn station
The S-Bahn station is operationally a simple stop with a central platform . Its tracks lie together with the track of the Hamburg freight bypass in an open cut below the street level. This crosses Wandsbeker Chaussee at approximately a right angle at the northern end of the platform, there is also a staircase and an elevator to this street. At the southern end, the bridge of the Pappelallee is crossed diagonally. The S-Bahn station has an average of around 19,600 boarding and disembarking passengers every day (Mon-Fri, 2018).
Metro station
The underground station, which also has a central platform, is located in a tunnel just below Wandsbeker Chaussee, roughly between Seumestrasse and Menckesallee, which is across it. The tunnel section is so deep here that it also passes under the S-Bahn station. At both ends of the platform there are stairs that lead to intermediate levels with service facilities (ticket sales), from which the surface can be reached via several exits. The underground station has an average of around 18,900 people entering and leaving the station every day (Mon-Fri, 2017).
Since September 2019, the stop has been equipped with two elevators and a tactile guidance system for the blind , making it barrier-free.
Transfer options
A direct and level connection of the S-Bahn and the U-Bahn platform was not possible here, so transfer passengers have to go to street level and there to the stairs of the other station.
At street level between the exits of both train stations are the stops of several city and express bus routes of the Hamburger Verkehrsverbund (HVV).
There is a StadtRAD Hamburg station opposite the S-Bahn entrance .
history
Today's S-Bahn station was opened in 1906 as part of the extension of the connecting line to Ohlsdorf as a stop for the Hamburg-Altona urban and suburban railway. It was not until 1934 that the name "S-Bahn" was used.
In 1962, the underground station went into operation with the opening of the new underground line to Wandsbek. The mezzanine level with the ticket halls was rebuilt several times over the years, the ticket sales points were dismantled or dismantled, the ticket machines were changed several times (initially numerous single-price machines, later surcharge machines) and the barrier systems were dismantled. The platform was largely in its original condition until 2008. In 2009 the walls behind the tracks were completely redesigned. Since then, tiles in various shades of blue have dominated the picture, similar to what was previously implemented in shades of red at the Wartenau underground station .
