The Steinstraße underground station is a tunnel stop of the Hamburg underground in the city center ( Hamburg-Altstadt district ). The station abbreviation for the operator company Hamburger Hochbahn is "ST".

construction

Steinstraße is a station on the U1 line . It is located on the eastern edge of downtown Hamburg between Deichtorplatz and Steinstraße, which gives it its name . The subway runs under the Wallring road tunnel , which runs parallel and is part of Ring 1 around the city center. The platform is accordingly at a great depth. At both ends of the central platform, an escalator and a fixed staircase lead to mezzanines. The southern mezzanine floor is on the −1 level and leads directly to a pedestrian tunnel that crosses under Deichtorplatz from Amsinckstrasse to Johanniswall ( Kontorhausviertel with Sprinkenhof and city high-rise buildings). In this tunnel system, separated from the pedestrian area by barriers, is the bicycle area, which has a ramp on the east side, but also stairs to the surface on the west side. The corresponding mezzanine floor on the north side of the station on the Geesthang is therefore on the −2 level, from which three escalators (one of which is fixed) lead in a westerly direction to a distribution floor on the −1 level, several of which Stairs lead to the exits in the Steinstrasse / Johanniswall / Lange Mühren area. The mezzanine floors used to be where the ticket offices and barrier systems were located . These were dismantled at the end of the 1970s, after several ticket machines (one for each price level) were set up in the late 1960s , which were replaced by two surcharge ticket machines in each counter hall in the mid-1970s. In the southern counter hall, which also offered direct access to the trams that used to run here in the direction of Veddel, Wilhelmsburg and Harburg, there used to be a snack bar and a baker's kiosk. In the 1970s there was still a newspaper and cigarette kiosk on the platform itself, which were initially closed with plates after the tenants moved out and later dismantled. After the introduction of self-handling by the train drivers via monitors in the vehicle, the train dispatch house on the platform was also removed and the station renovated. The lighting was also changed.

The two neighboring stations, Hauptbahnhof Süd and Meßberg, are each less than 500 meters away, they are the shortest distance between stops on the entire U1 line.

history

The Steinstraße underground station is part of the extension of the “ Kell-Jung Line ” built before the Second World War from the Jungfernstieg terminus at the time to the main train station, which was built in the late 1950s. The section from Meßberg to the main train station with the Steinstrasse stop was opened in October 1960. The architects of the station were Gottfried Schramm and Jürgen Elingius .

More lines

At the station there are now transfer options to a Metrobus , an express bus , a city bus and a night bus line that have their stop north of Deichtorplatz. The downtown bus stop is located on the former tram route between the entrances to the Wallring tunnel and can be reached directly from the pedestrian tunnel via a separate staircase.
