The Garstedt U-Bahn station is a tunnel stop on the U1 line of the Hamburg U-Bahn in the city of Norderstedt . The operating abbreviation of the operating company Hamburger Hochbahn is "GA".

The Garstedt stop is in today's center of the Norderstedt district of Garstedt . The station has a 120-meter-long central platform with two staircases in the middle third. They lead directly into the entrance building above the station, which is now integrated into the “Herold Center” shopping center to the east .

The station is served by the U1 line every 10 minutes during the day with eight or nine-car trains. During rush hour between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., the train sequence is reduced to 5 minutes. On Saturday and Sunday nights, Garstedt is approached every 20 minutes as part of continuous night traffic .

Directly to the west of the train station is a small bus station , which is served by some bus lines from the Norderstedter and Hamburg districts and from the eastern communities of the Pinneberg district . There is also a taxi stand here.

To the north of the bus station there is a parking garage that was renovated in the early 1990s, also for park-and-ride traffic.

Already since 1953 the Alsternordbahn ( abbreviated to ANB in HVV ) has passed the current Garstedt stop . Since runway 2 was extended to the area of ​​the then still independent municipality of Garstedt during the expansion of Hamburg Airport at the beginning of the 1960s, this acted as compensation for this measure by the state of Hamburg, the extension of the Langenhorn railway from Ochsenzoll station beyond the Hamburg state border to Garstedt. There were various considerations for the construction of this underground line. First, the new Garstedt underground station should be closer to the former village center to the west. Construction began in 1967 as an expansion of the existing single-track Alsternordbahn , which was used by railbus and during rush hour with battery-powered railcars. This was withdrawn to the Birkenweg stop, from here to the Ochsenzoll train station, rail replacement traffic with five Büssing Senator buses from VHH and HHA took place.

The affected stretch of road was lowered and double-tracked, three previous level crossings were replaced by reinforced concrete bridges. The short section of the tunnel with the new underground station was built using an open cut. It was opened at the end of May 1969, and the U1 subway line was extended on June 1, 1969. The line was initially single-track from the track change south of the station to shortly before the state border at the bridge over the Tarpenbek , but was expanded to double-track in autumn 1969 due to the good use of the new offer . Also in May 1969, the ANB was extended to the new end point "Garstedt" above the underground station, it was on site level and consisted of a simple track with a buffer stop on the platform to the east of it. Passengers on the Alsternordbahn in the direction of Hamburg had to change to the subway here. Around the height of the now abandoned Birkenweg stop, a siding was built for control cars only carried during rush hour . In 1970 the “Herold Center” shopping center with its four residential towers was built directly to the east of the train station. The Karstadt department store to the south also created additional traffic demand.

In the reception building, which initially stood alone, with two exits to the platform, there was a newspaper and candy kiosk and a bar, the one-price ticket machines that were common at the time were supplemented by a ticket counter , from which the trains (via cameras on the Platform and monitors). The “Herold Center” shopping center, which was built shortly after the subway station was completed, was given direct access from the east exit of the subway station building. Around 1977 the many different one-price ticket machines required - due to the HVV tariff system - were replaced by two surcharge machines.

Between 1991 and 1996 the underground line from Garstedt was extended on the ANB route to Norderstedt Mitte (new city center). For this purpose, Verkehrsgesellschaft Norderstedt (VGN) was founded as a subsidiary of Stadtwerke Norderstedt, which initially had to purchase land. To clear the route for the actual underground construction, the Alsternordbahn was virtually rebuilt east of the old single-track ANB route. After the completion of the new double-track underground line, both lines were in operation for a few days. After the subway went into operation, the interim route was dismantled and the route was used for a cycle and footpath.

In the course of the underground expansion, the new tunnel north of the platform was made so wide that there was space for a dirt track between the main tracks. Before that, the underground tracks ended at the platform and the trains used a still existing double track change south of the platform.
