The Jungfernstieg station is an important hub for local public transport in Hamburg . It extends over three interconnected platform halls under the street of the same name and part of the Inner Alster / Kleine Alster . The first platform was opened on March 25, 1931 with the "KellJung" line , today part of the U1 . At that time there was no connection within the station facilities to the ring line , today's line U3 , until 1958 .

construction

Work on behalf of the Hamburger Hochbahn , founded in 1911, began in March 1930; the architects were Distel & Grubitz . An open excavation pit was created at Jungfernstieg by backfilling sand in the Inner Alster and adding sheet pile walls. By the time it was completed, more than 1,300 tons of iron were used in one million working hours, plus 3,500 tons of cement, over 14,000 cubic meters of gravel, 300,000 bricks and around 1,300 cubic meters of wood. The Jungfernstieg station was the first underwater railway station in Germany. It was one of the first public buildings in the country to have an escalator. For the inauguration on March 25, 1931, only a provisional platform could be opened at the level of Neuer Wall . The reason was unexpected construction delays due to boulders, wooden piles and muddy building ground. The completion in April 1934 enabled the continuous use of the new line between the Kellinghusenstrasse and Jungfernstieg stations .

The entire underground station complex comprises four platforms on three levels, the first for the U1 , two for the U2 and U4 , and a platform in between, which is served jointly by the S1, S2 and S3 lines of the City-S-Bahn . In addition, since 1958 there has been an underground connection to the Rathaus underground station and the U3 that runs there, so that until 1973 these two underground stations were used together as a transfer station.

At street level - level 0 - buses run by the Hamburger Verkehrsverbund (HVV), while the central pier of the Alster ships is located on level −1, with direct access to the bus stop area. On the mezzanine level −1 there are four separate ticket halls with the entrances and exits to the street surface and the tunnel connections; There are also ticket machines , various shops and snack bars here; reachable u. a. from Jungfernstieg , Bergstrasse , Ballindamm and Alstertor and from the north side of Rathausmarkt . The underground corridor, equipped with showcases , between the U3 stop Rathaus and the southern end of the U1 platform - known as the “Passage of the City Partnerships ” - runs mostly under Bergstrasse .

The platform of the U1 line on traffic level −2 runs directly under the Jungfernstieg and the Reesendamm bridge and crosses under the Kleine Alster at a right angle. The neighboring stops are around 0.8 km ( Stephansplatz north) and 0.7 km ( Messberg in the south-east) away.

The platform of the City-S-Bahn (initially for the interim line S10), which opened on June 1, 1975, is located on level −3 . The south-western part of the platform with access via a mezzanine to the counter hall on Rathausmarkt is located under the Kleine Alster , the north-eastern part under the Inner Alster . A fixed staircase in the central area connects directly to the U1 platform above, the north-eastern exits lead to the U2 platforms and the counter hall at the Alstertor . From the platform it is 0.7 km south-east to the Stadthausbrücke and 1.4 km north-west in an arch to the main station .

The platforms of the U2 and U4 are 16 m below the Inner Alster on level −4. The two parallel direction platforms extend below the investor the Alster vessels in east-west direction to below the mouth Alstertor in the Ballindamm . The two inner tracks (tracks 4 and 5) have been used by the U2 since 1973, while the track troughs for the U4 line (tracks 3 and 6), which opened on November 29, 2012, are on the outside. The distance to the east adjoining stop Hauptbahnhof Nord is 0.8 km; In the opposite direction, after 0.6 km on the U2 route, the Gänsemarkt (Oper) underground station is reached .
