Messberg
The Meßberg is a place in Hamburg's old town that has been occupied as a mesberch since 1458. Located at marsh level, it used to be threatened by flooding. Before it was built, it was used to store rubbish, so the name can be translated as “dung heap”.
history
Along with the mountain , the horse market , the old fish market and the hop market , the Meßberg was one of the five main squares in the (old) town for a long time. The majority of the traders came from the surrounding area: milk, butter, eggs and cheese came from the Vier- und Marschlanden . The milk keepers sometimes brought the milk into the city themselves or left it to rural middlemen , the milkers , who in turn sold the milk to Hamburg dairy farmers or sold it on the street themselves. The transport took place over the water with so-called milk ewer . In winter the marsh farmers sold cabbage. Vegetables, fruit and flowers were brought to the Messberg for the first time in 1693 by the four-country farmers, the Grönhöker . Similar goods came from the Bardowicker Land, from which yellow roots and onions ("zippels") came.
The farmers from the Altes Land enriched the market mainly with tree fruits such as cherries and morels. Spinach, sorrel and other kitchen vegetables were supplied by the farmers from the islands of the Elbe .
The most popular fish at the time were Elbe perch and ruff. Salmon, eels and herrings were also common on the Elbe. Crayfish were hardly to be caught in the Elbe; they had been brought in by waterways from Magdeburg and Berlin barges and by wagons from farmers in Mecklenburg.
In 1907 a temporary, additional market place with landing facilities between Messberg, Deichtor and Alter Wandrahmsbrücke was put into operation to relieve the hop market . In 1911, both markets moved to the wholesale market in the newly built Deichtorhallen on Deichtorplatz .
buildings
The Meßberghof , which was called the Ballin House until 1938 , and the Chilehaus are located on the Meßberg.
The Meßberg underground station is on the first underground line in Hamburg , which was built after a break of 26 years due to the war. It was opened on February 22nd, 1960. It is served by the U1 line. The exits at the western end of the platform are on Brandstwiete .
