Sweti Vlas [ svɛˈti vɫas ] (common transliteration Sveti Vlas, Bulgarian Свети Влас , German also St. Vlas , or St. Vlas , named after St. Vlas ) is a town and a holiday resort in Bulgaria , in the Burgas Oblast , in the Nessebar municipality .

Sveti Vlas is located north of the provincial capital Burgas , between Sunny Beach and the holiday village Elenite . Sveti Vlas is a seaside resort at the transition from the southern Balkan mountains to the Black Sea . The place has a special microclimate with average summer temperatures of 26 ° C and at least 90 days of sunshine during the season.

10 km from Sveti Vlas is the UNESCO cultural site and community center of Nessebar. Burgas is 35 km further south. There is regular bus service between the cities.

Sveti Vlas has a 1000 m long beach that slopes gently into the sea. It is shaped by hotels, guest houses, restaurants, shops and parks. Sveti Vlas, in contrast to the nearby Sunny Beach, has been one of the most luxurious resorts in the country, especially since the construction of the Marina Dinevi.

history

The settlement was founded in the 2nd century by the Thracian tribe of Larissi . At that time she was called Larisa .

In the 14th century, five monasteries were built in the region, which is why it was also called Little Athos :

  • Saint Petar (Bulgarian Свети Петър),
  • Saint Ilija (Bulgarian Свети Илия),
  • Saint Andrei (Bulgarian Свети Андрей),
  • Saint Ana (Bulgarian Света Ана), women's monastery
  • and Saint Vlas (bulg. Свети Влас), from whom the present-day city descends

In the 14th century the settlement was called Sveti Vlas. The monastery existed from the 14th to the 18th century, and it was finally burned down during numerous pirate attacks. The Holy Vlas was the protector of traders, farmers and healer and is a recognized saint by both the Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church .

During the time of the Ottoman rule the settlement had different names: Kjuchjuk Manastir (Bulgarian Кючюк манастир; German: Small monastery), later the village of Manastir (Bulgarian Манастир; German monastery). All the monasteries were destroyed by the Ottomans in the 18th century, but some of their traces are still visible. The village has officially been called Sweti Vlas since 1886 . At that time, Eastern Rumelia united with the Principality of Bulgaria . In 1963 Sveti Vlas became a "marine climate health resort".

Sveti Vlas has been a city since February 2, 2006 .
