Slantschew brjag [ ˈsɫɤntʃɛf ˈbrjak ] (also written Slanchev bryag , Bulgarian Слънчев бряг , literally: 'sunny coast', known in Germany as Sunny Beach ) is a Bulgarian seaside resort on the Black Sea in the Nessebar Bay in the northern part of the Gulf of Burgas . Sunny Beach is the largest tourist destination in the country and is managed as a national health resort by the Bulgarian government, the municipality of Nessebar and representatives of the hotel owners. The next big city is the provincial capital Burgas , around 35 kilometers south.

In 1989 the seaside resort had 108 hotels with over 27,000 beds and over 130 restaurants. Today there are over several hundred restaurants, bars and pubs as well as at least 800 hotels (most of them were built in the early 2000s) that can accommodate over 200,000 people. The beach is eight kilometers long and up to 100 meters wide. To the south, Sunny Beach has merged with Nessebar , or Rawda, and in the north with Sweti Vlas . Sunny Beach is known for its intense nightlife with numerous bars, pubs and clubs and is especially popular with younger people.

There are no cultural and historical sights in Sunny Beach, in contrast to the surrounding area (see sights in the municipality of Nessebar ).

Like the other tourist strongholds of Albena and Golden Sands, Sunny Beach is almost deserted in winter.

There is a kindergarten, a primary school and a tourism high school in Sunny Beach.

traffic

The nearest airports are Burgas (approx. 35 km) and Varna (approx. 100 km), whereby the journey from the latter is via a two-lane pass road through the Balkan Mountains and can take up to three hours by car. The route Burgas - Pomorie - Nessebar - Sunny Beach is mostly two-lane (as of June 2012). It is the main route for the arrival and departure of tourists in the areas north of Burgas as well as an important national and international road between Burgas and Varna and between the Bulgarian-Turkish and Bulgarian-Romanian borders ( European route 87 ). Therefore, there may be traffic jams on this route in the summer months. A four-lane expressway, which is supposed to relieve traffic, is under construction and should be completed in 2014. Furthermore, Sunny Beach is to be connected to the planned Black Sea motorway.

Regular bus connections to all major cities in Bulgaria are handled by the bus station (Awtogara). Bus connections to Burgas (journey time approx. 30 minutes) take place every half hour and are offered by several providers. In the summer there are also hourly bus trips to Sofia (journey time approx. Four hours) and Plovdiv (journey time approx. 2.5 hours).

Like Nessebar, Sunny Beach is not connected to the Bulgarian rail network. The nearest train station is in Burgas (→ Verkehr in Burgas ), opposite the South Bus Station (Awtogara jug).
