The Awtomagistrala "Tscherno More" or Awtomagistrala A5 ( Bulgarian Автомагистрала А5 , or Автомагистрала "Черно море" Awtomagistrala "Tscherno More" , in German , is a completed motorway in the Eastern part of Bulgaria) . The motorway runs partly along the ancient Roman road Via Pontica and, once completed, will connect the two largest Black Sea coastal cities in Bulgaria, Varna and Burgas . The European route 87 , which runs from Odessa in Ukraine to Antalya in Turkey , will then run along the entire length of the A5 Avtomagistrala. It is also to be part of a future "Black Sea ring road".
In Varna it will be connected to the Avtomagistrala "Hemus" (A2) from Sofia to Varna via the Аспарухов мост / Asparuhow most (Eng. Asparuch Bridge) . In Burgas, it should merge into the Avtomagistrala “Trakija” (A1), which also leads to Sofia.
The Black Sea motorway will noticeably shorten the travel time between the two cities of Varna and Burgas: Today, the approx. 120 km route takes over 2 ½ hours. At present, all traffic has to be handled via two two-lane pass roads ( Obzor Pass and Djulinski Pass ) that cross the eastern Balkan Mountains between Nessebar and Obzor .
Since there is no direct rail link between Varna and Burgas, public transport will also benefit greatly from the new motorway.
Sections in operation
At the moment only a 10-kilometer stretch near Varna has been completed, which bypasses the Varna-Asparuchowo district.
