The Sofia Ring Road ( Bulgarian Софийски околовръстен път / Sofijski okolowrasten pat) is an outer ring road that now surrounds the Bulgarian capital Sofia as a bypass . It is an important artery that completely circles Sofia and is approximately 60 km in length. In the past, the ring road was known as the "Ring- Chaussee " (Bulgarian Околовръстно шосе / Okolowrastno schose) (ie country road).

course

The ring road usually circles the city outside the city area. The beginning or end at kilometer 0 is the intersection with the national road I-1 in Knjaschewo , the kilometers are clockwise .

The ring road is divided into two main sections:

  • Northern part (Severna daga) north of the future highway Severna skorostna tangenta (Sofioter Nordtangente) (33 km) - from the A1 Trakija in the southeast with a wide arc to the north to the motorway junction with the future A7 to Kalotina and Serbia
  • Southern part (Juschna daga) (27 km) - from the A1 Trakija south of Sofia at the foot of the Vitosha Mountains to the Lyulin district in the west.

A motorway junction has been built in the Obelja / Ljulin area, which connects to the A6 Ljulin motorway to the south (towards the Greek border). A motorway junction is also being created with the A7 motorway to the Serbian border crossing at Kalotina (see map).

expansion

The ring road is not continuously developed as a motorway, many intersections are still level and are regulated by traffic lights.

The ring road is to be widened in several stages and made crossing-free, for which 300 million euros have been estimated (4–5 million euros per kilometer). It is currently mostly two-lane (1 lane in each direction) and only four lanes in some sections. In the sections of Boulevard Balgaria - Blvd. Alexandar Malinov, Blvd. Zarigradsko Chaussee - Blvd. Botewgradsko Chaussee, as well as in the western part between Blvd. Slivnitsa and the motorway hub with the Ljulin motorway , construction work has already been completed. Construction is currently underway on a further section with a length of 4 km in between Blvd. Slivnitsa and the Sofia north bypass. In the final stage of expansion, the Sofioter Ring is to be expanded to six lanes (2 × 3 lanes) over its entire length.

Urban planning effects

Building activity is brisk on both sides of the Ringstrasse, with mainly representative residential complexes being built in the south, at the foot of the Vitosha Mountains, on the south side. Many new commercial properties are being built directly on the Ringstrasse.

Outside the ring road, in the south, in the direction of Vitosha Mountains , there are four districts of Sofia, which are known as "Vitoscha-Kragen" (Bulgar. "Витошка яка" / Witoschka jaka). These are the districts of Knjaschewo , Bojana , Dragalewzi and Simeonowo . To the west lie the three districts of Sofia, Gorna Banja , Suchodol and Filipowzi, outside the ring road.
