The Avtomagistrala "Trakija" or Avtomagistrala A1 ( Bulgarian Автомагистрала А1 "Тракия" , to German A1 motorway Thrace) is a motorway in southern Bulgaria . It connects the Bulgarian capital Sofia with the Black Sea city of Burgas . An extension across the Sofia plain , from the Serbian-Bulgarian border at Kalotina to Sofia via the Sofia ring road is still being planned, as is a planned connection southwest to the Macedonian M2 motorway and from there to the Albanian cities of Durrës and Vlora as part of it of the Pan-European Transport Corridor No. VIII .
The highway bears the name of the historical landscape of Thrace (southeastern Bulgaria), which it also crosses, and roughly follows the route of the ancient Via Militaris .
Construction of the motorway began in 1974 and ended in 2013 - after 39 years of construction. The first section between Sofia and Plovdiv was completed in 1985, in 1995 it grew to Orizovo, in 2006 the section between Burgas and Karnobat was put into operation, at the beginning of 2007 then from Orizovo to Chirpan , at the end of 2007 an extension to Stara Sagora . The rest of the route was built after Bulgaria's accession to the EU in the years 2010 to 2013 with financial support from EU funds .
Course of the road
The highway begins at the Vranja interchange (Bulgarian Враня) on the Sofia ring road and runs southeast towards Novi Khan , Wakarel and Ichtiman . At kilometer 55 is the 900 m long Trayanowi Wrata tunnel (Bulgarian тунел "Траянови врата", German tunnel "Thracian Gate", named after the nearby fortress of the same name) with a tunnel for both directions that goes through the Ichtiman - Surveys in progress . This is also where the borders between the areas of Sofia and Thrace are located. After the tunnel, the highway turns east and runs near Kaluregowa , Pazardzhik and Plovdiv . There are three motorway exits near Plovdiv. At Plodowitowo the Maritsa motorway branches off in a south-easterly direction, the Thrace motorway leads past the village in a north-east direction and runs west of Chirpan . At kilometer 177 there is the exit to Stara Sagora , then the motorway continues about 5 km south of Nowa Sagora , and further north of Yambol . From Yambol it now leads in an easterly direction past Karnobat and joins the European route 773 7 km from Burgas .
