Haskovo [ xaskovo ] ( Bulgarian Хасково , Turkish Hasköy ) is a city in Bulgaria , situated in a hilly valley. The city is considered a road traffic junction and is the administrative seat of the Haskovo Oblast of the same name .
location
history
Settlements in this region were made by Thracian tribes in the late Bronze Age. The Thracian tomb of Alexandrovo dates from this time . Archaeological excavations reveal the remains of fortified settlements from the 5th century BC. Plovdiv , 64 km away, was the capital of the Thracians . In the 1st century the region was under the control of the Roman Empire , at the end of the 4th century the Byzantine Empire . In the 8th century, the region was conquered by the first Bulgarian empire and the city of Haskovo was built, which had a fortification function and at the same time was supposed to secure the main road that ran through the area.
Cityscape
The center of the city is designed as a pedestrian zone with numerous shops, there is an open-air stage in the city.

- a statue of the Virgin Mary , considered to be the tallest in Europe
- a mosque from 1395 (the oldest in Bulgaria)
- Monuments to Petko Wojwoda , among others , a campaigner of Garibaldi
- the church of Sv. Archangel with carved iconostasis and frescoes
- the city theater
There are mineral baths in the vicinity of the city, in which the Winiwarter-Buerger disease is treated. The Kenana Nature Park is nearby.

The Haskovo Malevo Airport has adjusted its service. The Plovdiv Airport is located 75 km to the west.
The Haskovo central bus station is accessible by bus connections from Plovdiv, Sofia and Burgas.
