Plovdiv International Airport (also Krumowo Airport , Bulgarian Летище Пловдив ) is located in Bulgaria near the village of Krumowo , about 20 km south of the country's second largest city, Plovdiv . The civil operator is a joint venture which is 58.08% in the Danish company Nordic Airport Infrastructure ApS, 36% in the Bulgarian state and 6% in private donors.
The airport is also used for military purposes. The Bulgarian Air Force refer to it as the 24th helicopter base, 24-ta Wertoletna awiazionna basa (24-та вертолетна авиобаза) (24th WAB).
Military use
On the west side of the airport is the military base, where three helicopter squadrons of the Bulgarian air force are now stationed.
- 1/24-ta Wertoletna awioeskadrila (helicopter squadron), equipped with Mi-24W combat helicopters
- 2/24-ta Wertoletna awioeskadrila , equipped with Mi-17 and AS532UL transport helicopters
- Otdelna utschebno awiosweno (independent training chain ), equipped with Bell 206B-3 helicopters
The Bulgarian Aviation Museum is also located here, with documents, uniforms, medals and photos in the first hall. Aircraft models are on display in the second hall and 70 airplanes in the outdoor area, including an original Arado Ar 196 .
Civil use
The civil terminal is at the north end of the airport. The Irish airline Ryanair has been flying to London and Frankfurt-Hahn airports twice a week since December 2010 . Another connection was opened in May 2011, from Plovdiv to Bergamo / Milan , but this was discontinued in early 2012. In 2013 the line to London was expanded to 3 flights per week. The Russian airline S7 Airlines operates a seasonal airline in winter to Moscow-Domodedovo . Otherwise charter flights from Ireland and Russia as well as private flights land in Plovdiv.
The number of passengers in 2016 was around 77,000.
The connection from Frankfurt-Hahn was discontinued on March 23, 2018. Accordingly, Ryanair is currently flying to Plovdiv from Brussels-Charleroi , London-Stansted and Bergamo .
Transport links
The airport can only be reached by private car or taxi. The nearest train station is about three kilometers away on the Plovdiv - Asenovgrad route, but the connections are not coordinated with arrivals and departures. There is currently no bus connection.
