The Avtomagistrala "Struma" or Avtomagistrala A3 ( Bulgarian Автомагистрала А3 "Струма" Awtomagistrala A3 "Struma" ) is a partially completed motorway in Bulgaria . It begins at the Dragitschewo motorway junction near Pernik , where the Awtomagistrala "Lyulin" (A6) coming from Sofia ends. The Awtomagistrala "Struma" then runs south and ends at the Greek border at Kulata . The highway bears the name of the Struma river along which it runs.
Once completed, it will be one of the most expensive motorways ever built in the European Union. The project construction costs amount to at least 1 billion euros.
Cost and state of development
The length of the future motorway should be around 156 kilometers. It is also part of Europastraße 79 and Pan-European Transport Corridor IV , which is to connect the Aegean Sea with the Danube and Danube Bridge 2 . In addition, the A6 will provide a direct connection from Sofia via Thessaloniki to Athens .
The Dragitschewo motorway junction has been in operation since December 17, 2010 .
For nature conservation reasons and because of the difficult geography, the route in the Kresna gorge of the Struma river is problematic in that large nature reserves from Natura 2000 have to be crossed. According to the last project variant, the gorge is to be bypassed by a 13 km long tunnel, which would make it the longest road tunnel on the Balkan Peninsula.
Current condition
86 km are currently completed, 71 km of which are directly from the Dragitschewo motorway junction as a continuation of the A6 to Blagoevgrad . In addition, there has been construction work between Kresna and Sandanski since September 2015 . The section between Sandanski and Kulata on the border with Greece with a length of 14.7 km is already finished . The completion of the entire route is planned for August 2019.
