Brandstwiete
The Brandstwiete is a historic street in Hamburg's old town near the Meßberg underground station .
The name "Brandstwiete" is derived from the Hamburg citizen Hein Brand , whose arrest in 1410 led to the uprising of the Hamburg citizens and to the first Hamburg constitution . Hein Brand's house was on that street. Twiete is a common name for a connecting path between two streets or a narrow path between houses.
The street runs from the old fish market / Speersort (where the editorial team of the weekly newspaper Die Zeit is located in the Helmut Schmidt House ) to the Speicherstadt , where it ends at the Kornhausbrücke on the Zollkanal . The German Customs Museum is also located here .
Newer development
The Neuer Dovenhof office building , which was built between 1991 and 1994, is located at Brandstwiete No. 1 . The architecturally important Dovenhof office building , built in 1885/86, was located south of the intersection and was demolished in 1967. In its place, a building used by the news magazine Der Spiegel was erected from 1969 to 2011 .

A closed row of houses from around 1878 extends between Willy-Brandt-Strasse and Zippelhaus Strasse on Brandstwiete. The entire ensemble, as well as the individual houses, are designated as cultural monuments.
