history

As early as the 1950s, there was a live club on Brandstwiete called Jazzhouse, where artists like Herbie Hancock had performed. In 1976 Knust was opened in the basement of Haller's commercial building in the corner building at Brandstwiete 2, and it quickly developed into a trendy meeting place. The name was chosen after the North German word for edges . In April 1984 REM gave their first two concerts in Germany here . Over the years - in addition to the well-known “tight dance parties” - many well-known bands and artists have played here, Heather Nova as well as Beck and Jeff Buckley . In 1992 and 1993 the club was named the best live club in Germany by Spex magazine . On December 31, 2001, the old Knust had to close - in its place there was a new building, which was built by the municipal Sprinkenhof AG together with the owner of the house and was planned as a "house for small businesses". The demolition of the building was discussed in the media, and criticism was also raised. In the place of the old Knust there is now a bank branch.

The Knust finally found new premises in the former cattle slaughterhouse in St. Pauli, where numerous concerts had already taken place. The reopening took place on August 30, 2003. Artists such as the Levellers , Oceana , Rival Sons , Lacuna Coil or Latin Quarter perform in the club, which can seat around 500 spectators. The home games of FC St. Pauli are also shown here on a large screen.
