biography
Sharon Shannon comes from a musical Irish family: her parents were dancers and she and her three siblings learned various instruments as children. Sharon plays the accordion and violin.
At a young age she founded the band Arcady , but then embarked on a solo career in the late 1980s. While recording an album, she met two members of the Waterboys and joined the band. She is featured on the album Room to Roam , but it was the last of the Waterboys before the breakup. She then completed her solo album entitled Sharon Shannon , which was a great debut success for her in 1991. Together with some other Irish musicians, she then recorded the sampler A Woman's Heart , to which she contributed the tracks Blackbird and Coridinio . The album sold around 200,000 copies, making it the best-selling Irish album to date and Shannon one of the most popular Irish musicians.
In the following years she regularly released successful albums. She repeatedly borrowed from the musical styles of other countries such as Jamaica, Finland and Portugal. On the album Out the Gap (1994) she worked with a reggae producer, on Each Little Thing she interpreted a Chilean song as well as pieces by Grace Jones and Fleetwood Mac . The Diamond Mountain Sessions (2000) moved in the direction of American alternative country and also gave it some success in the United States.
In addition to her solo appearances, she also plays with her band, the Woodchoppers , to which her sister Mary Shannon, herself a successful mandolin player, belongs.
Sharon Shannon reached the top of the Irish charts with her albums again and again and was also able to land smaller single hits. But she had her biggest hit in 2007 with The Galway Girl . She originally recorded the song in 2000 with author Steve Earle . At a concert she played the song with the Irish singer Mundy . The recording ended up on the radio and was played there regularly. A studio recording then became the number 1 hit and the best-selling download single in 2007. Her best-of compilation in 2008, which was named The Galway Girl , also reached number 1 on albums.
