Rival Sons is an American rock band from Long Beach , California .

history

In 2008 guitarist Scott Holiday, drummer Michael Miley and bassist Robin Everhart formed the band after breaking up their previous band Black Summer Crush with oleander singer Thomas Flowers. Miley had heard of singer Jay Buchanan before. They contacted him on MySpace and after a failed attempt they were finally able to win him over to the band.

The band signed a record deal with Atlantic Records , which was dissolved only a short time later. Since they were now without a record deal, they released their first album Before the Fire in 2009 digitally on their own. Jack Rivera of the Huffington Post called them in November 2009 a "Rock Band to Watch".

In 2010, Rival Sons made a name for themselves by supporting the likes of AC / DC , Alice Cooper and Kid Rock and playing a televised show at the Indianapolis 500 . UK metal record company Earache Records showed interest in the band and since Rival Sons liked the idea of "pushing the boundaries" by signing with a traditional death metal label, they did just that in the fall of 2010.

In the years 2011 to 2013 Rival Sons followed an intensive tour plan in addition to other album releases. With several hundred concerts, the band earned a reputation as an excellent live band. A growing audience was recorded quickly, particularly in Europe.

In February 2011 the self-titled EP was released on iTunes , which was followed by Pressure & Time in June 2011 . The cover of Pressure & Time comes from the graphic artist Storm Thorgerson ( Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon ), who died in 2013 . The album was written, recorded and mixed in Los Angeles , California in just 20 days right after the band returned from a tour. According to the band, this fast working principle was already used on Before the Fire .

After Pressure & Time achieved international success, the band played some major festivals such as Sonisphere, T in the Park, Rock Werchter, Arras and Rock am Ring . They also supported Judas Priest in July 2011 , followed by their first full European tour in November. On this every show in Great Britain as well as a few other shows on the continent were sold out. Furthermore, they were able to record their first live TV appearances in Germany ( The Harald Schmidt Show and neoParadise ) and the USA as well as an appearance at the annual Classic Rock Awards, in which they played an acoustic set.

A European tour in 2012 was largely sold out. In mid-September 2012, the album Head Down was released, recorded in the Honey Pye Studio in Nashville , Tennessee and released on the German music label Century Media. A fully sold out tour followed in September and October 2012.

At the beginning of August 2013, bassist Robin Everhart announced that he was leaving the band because he saw his private life impaired by the many concerts. The rock 'n' roll lifestyle is not for him. Dave Beste was initially hired as a replacement.

In 2014 the band released their fourth studio album, Great Western Valkyrie . Dave Beste, who played bass on the new album, was officially announced as a new member of the band. In October of the same year, the band became known to a larger audience through TV appearances on the Late Show With David Letterman (USA) and the music show Later with Jools Holland (UK).

The extensive tour for the album Great Western Valkyrie dragged on until August 2015 - in the summer Rival Sons played many festival appearances in Europe. Further supporting appearances took place at concerts by Halestorm , Lenny Kravitz , Slash (musician) and AC / DC . At all concerts on the tour, the band was supported by keyboardist Todd E. Ögren-Brooks, who is now an integral part of the live line-up.

From September to October 2015 the band was busy recording their new album Hollow Bones in Nashville , which was released on June 10, 2016. In November and December 2015 Rival Sons were engaged as the opening act for Deep Purple in Europe. For 13 months, from the beginning of 2016 to the beginning of 2017, the band played in the opening act for the final tour of Black Sabbath . In 2017 the band played several appearances as the opening act for the Rolling Stones, including a German concert on October 9, 2017 in the ESPRIT-Arena in Düsseldorf.

On February 27, 2018, Rival Sons announced that they had signed a new record deal with the Atlantic Records label . The band had already started work on their latest studio album Feral Roots in November 2017 at RCA Studio A in Nashville . It was released on January 25, 2019. In November 2019, the band was nominated for two Grammys. For the album Feral Roots , the Rival Sons received a nomination in the category Best Rock Album , with the song Too Bad they were represented in the category Best Rock Performance .
