The hop market is a former market square in Hamburg's old town in front of the ruins of the former main church St. Nikolai .

history

The hop market was the main square of the medieval Neustadt when it was founded (not to be confused with today's Hamburg-Neustadt district ). The old town hall of the new town was also located here. After it was merged with the old town , the square was given the name "Neuer Markt". There were 40 to 60 market stalls on the market square; here was an officially approved sales point for meat.

The square was given its current name in the 14th century. It is derived from the beer brewers who met their hop needs here. Later the hop market became the Hamburg wholesale market for food. From 1897 until the relocation of the market to Deichtorplatz in 1911, only vegetables were sold. In 1907 there were 900 stalls on the market square.

A weekly market was held on Thursdays until mid-2014 . The district office forbade this, however, because the range of goods was not typical of the weekly market.

Vierländerin fountain

The four-country fountain

The Vierländerin fountain is located on the square , a reminder that most of the goods once traded on the hop market came from the Vierlanden region . Before the fountain was erected at this point in 1975, it had first stood on the Messberg and later at the market halls on Amsinckstrasse.
