The Agricultural Investigation and Research Institute Speyer (LUFA Speyer) is owned by the District Association of the Palatinate and is based in Speyer . It was founded in 1875 under the name "Agricultural chemical experimental station of the district committee of the Agricultural Association of the Palatinate".

Your tasks today are after us before investigations and research in the field of agriculture . It examines seeds , soils , fertilizers , feed and food for a wide range of valuable and value-reducing ingredients for agricultural businesses and other private companies .

LUFA Speyer primarily supports the states of Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland through examinations as part of the controls of seeds, fertilizers and animal feed. It also supports the ministries and authorities of these countries with its analytical know-how in the implementation of research projects and monitoring programs .

The objects of investigation also include water and secondary raw materials for agriculture, such as compost and sewage sludge . The LUFA is also involved in the monitoring of nuclear power plants on the borders of Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland through radioactivity measurements .

While the analytics are mainly located in the LUFA headquarters in Speyer-West , the field tests mainly take place in our own test station in Speyer-Nord in the Rinkenbergerhof area .

Rinkenbergerhof field test station

Since 1958, LUFA Speyer has maintained the Rinkenbergerhof field test station with 14 hectares of arable land. Long-term or long-term tests are carried out on the test site.

Long-term trials

  • This includes B. the oldest experiment, the humus experiment, which has been running since 1958 , which investigates the influence of different organic fertilizers on plant growth, yield and quality of harvested products in fruits in different crop rotations with and without irrigation .
  • Since 1978 the potash - magnesium - lime trial has investigated the influence of these nutrients on the yield and quality of various crops within a crop rotation .
  • Since 1981 the sewage sludge test to investigate the heavy metal accumulation in soil and plants depending on the frequency and amount of sewage sludge application and the nutrient supply.
  • Since 1983 the International Organic Nitrogen Fertilization Trial (IOSDV): It examines the influence of location and organic fertilization with increasing nitrogen application on yield formation and the quality of fruits within a crop rotation. Since 2005, the influence of reduced tillage has also been examined.
  • Since 1989 the experiment Chinese reed: cultivation worthiness and nutrient requirements : It investigates the influence of irrigation and fertilization on the development, yield and quality of Miscanthus .
  • The fallow trial has been investigating the effect of different types of vegetation on nitrogen mineralization under fallow since 1989 .
  • The project Integrated Nitrogen Management in Vegetable Growing has been investigating the influence of 1. location, 2. crop rotation, 3. management of harvest residues and 4. determination of fertilizer requirements on yield, quality, nitrogen balance and nitrate leaching in the intensive crop production of the Palatinate since 2004 . It is the basis for the program of measures as part of the implementation of the European Water Framework Directive .
  • The experiment Fast-growing tree species at border locations has been examining the economy and the ecological effects of growing fast-growing timber on agricultural border locations since 2009 .

VDLUFA

You LUFA Speyer is also the seat of the Association of German Agricultural Inspection and Research Institutes (VDLUFA).

Personalities

  • The agricultural chemist Max Kling (born June 1, 1874 in Marienau (now part of Nowy Dwór Gdański ), West Prussia ; † December 27, 1950 in Speyer) was one of the most important researchers at the facility . He worked for forty years at the Palatinate Agricultural Research Station and Chemical Research Institute in Speyer. His main research interests were animal feed science and fertilizer theory .
  • Otto Siegel (born June 12, 1909 in Lichtenegg , Württemberg ; † May 13, 1987 in Speyer), German agricultural chemist, was director of the agricultural investigation and research station in Speyer from 1951 to 1975. In Speyer, questions of plant nutrition and fertilization were the focus of his activities. He was particularly interested in the supply of nutrients to individual crops (especially wine , tobacco and potatoes ). Since 1953 he has given lectures on agricultural chemistry at the University of Mainz. In 1964 he was appointed associate professor there.
