The signal box in Cologne-Dünnwald is a museum for signal and telecommunications technology in the railway sector in Dünnwald .

background

The signal box is located at the former "Köln-Dünnwald" depot on the Troisdorf – Mülheim-Speldorf railway line .

The station was originally connected to both sides of the route to Cologne-Kalk and Opladen and was controlled by two mechanical standard signal boxes. In 1970, a DrS2 track diagram interlocking was installed in the signal box on the Cologne-Kalk side , which took over the control of the train station, which is now only connected on one side, and several level crossings. Finally, the signal box was dismantled into a block signal box that only secured the level crossings. In 2010 the technical safety of the level crossings was modernized and the signal box was abandoned in favor of central block signals controlled from Cologne-Kalk.

Use as a museum

In 2011, work began in the signal box building to set up a museum for signaling and telecommunications technology with railway operation simulation.

The centerpiece is the preserved DrS2 push button interlocking system, the original relay system of which is clearly visible in a glazed section of the control room.

As a second interlocking system, one of the first electronic interlockings from Essen-Kupferdreh train station was rebuilt in a fully functional manner. This is the SIMIS B design from 1991, whose representatives at Deutsche Bahn were all retired by the end of 2016 for reasons of age, the Kuperdreher interlocking as early as 2003.

In addition, another part of the exhibition deals with internal communication at the railways; For this purpose, the complete telephone exchange of a signal box (interrogation and switching device) was completely reconstructed.

According to the information provided by the operator, the museum can already be visited on request, and visits are also held at regular intervals.
