Hans Kuron (born November 4, 1904 in Breslau , † July 30, 1963 in Gießen ) was a German soil scientist .

Live and act

Kuron, the son of a doctor, studied chemistry at the Technical University in Breslau from 1923 and received his doctorate there in 1930 with a dissertation on the adsorption of vapors and gases on soils and clays . Since 1928 he worked as an assistant under Paul Ehrenberg at the Agricultural Chemistry and Bacteriological Institute of the University of Breslau . From 1932 to 1937 he was an assistant at the Institute for Soil Science at the University of Berlin , where he completed his habilitation in 1935 with a thesis on the conversion of fertilizer lime in the soil. In 1937 he was appointed associate professor to the chair for soil science at the University of Berlin. In the following years he mainly dealt with current problems of soil erosion . Several of his fundamental contributions in the journal “Der Forschungsdienst” on the goals and tasks of soil erosion research are noteworthy in terms of scientific history.

After 1945 Kuron initially worked as a freelancer. In 1949 he took over the management of the Agricultural Investigation and Research Institute in Speyer . In 1950 he followed a call from the agricultural faculty of the Justus Liebig University in Gießen to the chair of soil science. The institute he set up has been known as the "Institute for Soil Science and Soil Conservation" since 1956. The focus of his research in Giessen was clearly on the field of soil erosion. As an erosion researcher, Kuron was highly regarded at home and abroad. For many years he was president of international commissions for erosion research and from 1950 to 1962 he was vice-president of the German Soil Science Society . From 1954 to 1963 he also headed the Soil Physics Commission of this specialist society.

One of Kuron's most important scientific contributions is his speech from the Rector's Office held in Gießen on December 2, 1959, which was published in 1960 in the "Nachrichten der Gießener Hochschulgesellschaft" newspaper under the short title " Soil History". Kuron contrasts human history with a history of the soil that extends from the Stone Age to the present. His findings are groundbreaking for a representation of world history based on pedological conditions.
