The four-country fountain (2019)

The Vierländerin fountain is a listed fountain on the hop market in Hamburg's old town .

history

At the old site in Meßberg (1953)

The fountain was built in 1878 according to plans by Friedrich Johann Lorenz Meyer . The statue was made by Engelbert Peiffer . The fountain initially stood on the Messberg , later by the wholesale market halls on Amsinckstrasse. The fountain was badly damaged during the Second World War . In 1953 the base, canopy and statue were restored. The figure received a new head made of Cotta sandstone . In 1975 the fountain was installed on the hop market. Due to severe corrosion of the fountain roof and the iron frame, the Hamburg Monument Preservation Foundation appealed for donations in January 2013 to renovate the fountain. The foundation also saw the figure and the fountain basin as in need of renovation.

Information board at the fountain

The restoration of the Vierländerin fountain was completed with a small celebration on June 27, 2019 by the Foundation for Monument Preservation. The water is flowing again too.

description

The stone, ornate, octagonal base of the structure stands in a fountain basin. Four water-spouting ducks made of bronze sit on the base . In the fountain basin there is a statue of a young woman from four countries in traditional costume. She carries a yoke and a basket of vegetables. The figure stands under a cast-iron canopy, which is designed in the neo-Gothic style. The canopy is covered with a dome with triangular gables and a spire. The openings of the triangular gables and the roof hood are decorated with flowers, the gable openings with volutes . A lamp is attached to a mounting arm at each of the four corners of the roof hood.

The well structure is almost completely preserved. It was made using traditional forging techniques.

The stone statue base bears the inscription distributed around its four sides: “You get to know the people at the market”.
