Engelbert Peiffer

Engelbert Joseph Peiffer (different spelling Engelbert Josef Peiffer , also erroneously: Engelbert Pfeiffer ; * May 14, 1830 in Cologne , † October 18, 1896 in Hamburg ) was a German sculptor and medalist.

Life

Engelbert Peiffer, the son of a blacksmith, completed an apprenticeship in stonemasonry in Cologne, went to study at the Berlin Art Academy in 1850 and then worked for several years as a modeller in the Fernsichter clay factory in Kellinghusen . In 1862 he came to Hamburg. In 1873 he took over the management of the stonemasonry workshops of the Hanseatic Construction Company. Peiffer was a member of the Hamburg Artists' Association from 1832 .

Peiffer died in Hamburg in 1896 and was buried in the Ohlsdorf cemetery near the rose garden. The grave site was closed, the grave letter no longer exists. The Peiffersweg in Barmbek -Nord has been named after him since 1914 .

One of the oldest works by Peiffers in Hamburg is the grave memorial for Gabriel Riesser (1806–1863), the pioneer of the emancipation of the Jews, which was erected in the Grindelfriedhof in 1865 and, in 1937, relocated to the Jewish cemetery on Ilandkoppel Street . The white marble relief created by Peiffer shows the "luminous and undisguised truth that kills the serpent of lies" .

There are several important works by Peiffer at the Ohlsdorf cemetery: The grave of Rachal (1866), the grave of the engineer Alexander Schaeffer (1890), the grave of Bonne / Reye (1895) and the grave of the family of Kommerzienrat Heye (1893) .
