The Alte Oberpostdirektion in Hamburg was built between 1883 and 1887 as an office building of the Oberpostdirektion Hamburg and is a listed building . From 2011 the building was renovated and converted for use as a shopping center and medical care center.

Location and description

The building complex in the Hamburg-Neustadt district extends over a length of 300 meters between the Gorch-Fock-Wall, the Dammtorwall, the Dammtorstrasse and the Jungiusstrasse in the Hamburg-Mitte district .

It is a three-part structure. The palatial main building is built in the neo-renaissance style. It has three corner towers; the raised tower at the intersection of Gorch-Fock-Wall / Dammtorstraße bears a golden statue of Mercury . Since the first floor as the main floor is low, the proportions of the building act depressed. The building is decorated with several allegorical groups; the sculptures designed by Engelbert Pfeiffer refer to the postal system, the telephone and the telegraph . The building has four floors and a glass roof that was added later.

The extension buildings made of red brick and natural stone, built at a later date, continue the architectural style of the main building in a modern form.

History and use

The main building was built from 1883 to 1887 according to plans by the post office building management in the Reich Post Office under August Kind and Julius Raschdorff , and the senior site management by post building officer Ernst Hake and building officer Friedrich Ruppel . The Hamburg post office was inaugurated on February 5, 1887 by StS Dr. Heinrich von Stephan . The expansion took place from 1898 to 1901 according to plans by Paul Schuppan. The building, also known historically as the "Postpalast", was used by the Hamburg Oberpostdirektion for 90 years. The buildings remained almost undamaged during the world wars. After the building became too small for the purpose of the post office, the Oberpostdirektion was relocated to a new building in City Nord in 1978. The telegraph office, the Museum for Communication Hamburg , which closed in 2009, and the Post Office 36 until 2000 remained in the building.

In 1995 Johann Max Böttcher acquired the complex, which he later sold to the Hamburg DWI group, behind which the Dutch investor Hendrik de Waal stands. This began in 2011 with the renovation and expansion of the building. A total of € 150 million was invested. As part of the construction work, the building received the glass roof as a new, fourth floor.

The Alte Oberpostdirektion is used today as a shopping center and medical supply center.
