Reich Post Office

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Reichspostamt was a Reich authority in the German Empire , which was in charge of managing the Reichspost .

Jurisdiction

In the Reich Chancellery , Department I was previously responsible for the postal system and Department II for the telegraph system. These were combined on January 1, 1876 and transferred to an independent Reich authority under the direction of a postmaster general , which in turn was further developed in 1880 into the Reich Post Office , headed by a State Secretary . From 1902 it also acted with restrictions as the building authority of the German Empire.

In the Weimar Republic , the tasks of the Reich Post Office were essentially taken over by the Reich Ministry for the Post Office ; the newly created Reich Building Directorate was entrusted with the construction matters .

building

Today the Museum for Communication Berlin is housed in the building
An engraving of the building after C. Frenzel was the motif of a series of stamps published between 1900 and 1920 .

The new service building of the General Post Office was built from 1871 to 1874 according to plans by the architect Carl Schwatlo . The imperial postal administration had acquired the property at Leipziger Strasse 15 in Berlin between Mauerstrasse and Wilhelmstrasse for 227,125 thalers (681,375 marks ) from the merchant Siegfried Lövinsohn . The property was 33.75 meters on the street front, in its rear part it was 44.5 meters wide and over 100 meters deep; the laying of the foundation stone was celebrated on June 4, 1872. The building was three-story on the street side and four-story in the rear. The construction costs amounted to 765,000 thalers. 2,940 square meters were built on.
