Emil Benezé

Emil Benezé (born July 30, 1870 in Oldisleben , Thuringia , † 1943 ) was a German high school teacher.

Emil Benezé attended grammar school in Jena until 1890 and then studied German, classical philology, history and philosophy in Munich and Jena . In autumn 1894 he received his doctorate from the University of Jena under Friedrich Kauffmann . After completing his year of military service, he passed the senior teacher examination for the subjects of German, history and Latin in the summer of 1896. He then worked in Göttingen and at the Provincial Museum in Hanover . In 1897 he went to Hamburg , where he taught at various private girls' schools. From Easter 1903 to Easter 1904 he completed his probationary year at the Wilhelm Gymnasium in Hamburg and became a teacher at the Realschule in Eilbeck on April 1, 1904 , and later a senior teacher there. He then worked at the Oberrealschule Uhlenhorst and as headmaster at the Realschule Rothenburgsort . From 1925 until his retirement at the end of October 1933 he was a senior teacher at the Johanneum in Hamburg.

Benezé was heavily involved in Hamburg's cultural life. He was friends with the museum director Alfred Lichtwark and dealt with Hamburg's art history, at the adult education center he taught modern art history. He was also the editor of the art magazine Der Kreis . He was a member of the Society for Theater History and published the memoirs of the actress Karoline Schulze-Kummerfeld . He was also co-founder and head of the Lessing Society in Hamburg and head of the theater committee of the Hamburg Association of Philologists

He wrote numerous articles for the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie and the Allgemeine Lexikon der Bildenden Künstler from antiquity to the present .
