Friedrich Kauffmann (born September 14, 1863 in Stuttgart , † July 14, 1941 in Berlin ) was a German Germanic and Scandinavian medievalist and linguist . Kauffmann held the chair for German Philology at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel .

Life

Kauffmann studied from 1881 at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen with Alfred von Gutschmid and Erwin Rohde, first classical philology , turned in 1883 under the influence of Eduard Sievers to the German philology and the philology of the Germanic languages. In 1886 he received his doctorate in this subject with a thesis on the " Rhythmics of Heliand ". During his doctorate, he heard from Hermann Paul in Freiburg , who had a lasting impact on him scientifically. During his studies in 1881 he became a member of the Normannia Tübingen Association .

From 1886 to 1888, he stepped in Marburg an auxiliary point on the " German Language Atlas " by Georg Wenkers and devoted himself to Mundartforschung . During this time there was his habilitation in 1887 with a thesis on "Vocalism of the Swabian dialect in the Middle Ages and in modern times" . In 1891 he went on a study trip that included Denmark and other Scandinavian countries. In 1892 Kauffmann was appointed to an extraordinary professorship in Halle and followed the call to a full professorship in Jena . In 1895 he was offered the chair in Kiel. 1904–1905 he was rector of the university. In 1928 he retired.

Kauffmann researched and taught across the entire breadth of the subject of the metrics and historical development of Germanic literatures. He devoted himself intensively to the Gothic language and literature. As early as 1888 he published a monograph on "Deutsche Grammatik". He also researched the “Germanic antiquity” and the history of Germanic mythology and religion, for which, in addition to separate individual treatises, he published larger reviews such as his “German Mythology” in 1890 ( Göschen Collection ), in 1891 the “Mythological Testimonies from Roman Inscriptions” and, ultimately, his antiquity Main work the two-volume “Deutsche Altertumskunde” published in 1913 and 1923. Kauffmann saw this area of ​​antiquity in the Grimmian tradition as an interdisciplinary one and combined philology with historical studies and especially archeology. Among other things, he suggested that the stored inventories of the then "Vaterländisches Museum Kiel" and today's Schleswig-Holsteinisches Landesmuseum be examined specifically for meaningful materials. With his suggestion to secure the area of ​​the Danewerk near Schleswig by the state , he laid the foundation for the subsequent excavation of Haithabu .

Kauffmann was the father of the art historian Hans Kauffmann , the grandfather of the art historian Georg Kauffmann and the great-grandfather of the political scientist Clemens Kauffmann .
