Georg Kauffmann (art historian)

Georg Kauffmann (born April 5, 1925 in Kiel , † October 20, 2010 in Münster ) was a German art historian.

Life

Kauffmann was the son of the art historian Hans Kauffmann and the grandson of the philologist Friedrich Kauffmann . He first studied music at the Cologne University of Music , later Byzantine studies, archeology and art history in Cologne, Bonn and Paris. In 1954 he obtained his doctorate in Bonn. phil, in 1958 the habilitation followed . In the following two years he was Deputy Director at the Art History Institute in Florence . In 1962 he took over a visiting professorship at Harvard University , and in 1963 he was appointed adjunct professor at the University of Bonn . In 1965 he accepted a professorship for art history at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität in Münster, where he was director of the institute for art history until his retirement in 1990. The focus of his scientific work was art of the Italian Renaissance .

He was publisher and editor-in-chief of the journal for art history , his son was the political scientist Clemens Kauffmann .
