Hans Kauffmann (art historian)

Hans Kauffmann (born March 30, 1896 in Kiel , † March 15, 1983 in Bonn ) was a German art historian .

Life

Kauffmann belonged to the group around Cornelis Hofstede de Groot .

Hans Kauffmann, who in 1919 in Kiel with a thesis on Rembrandt received his doctorate in art work and at 1922 Adolph Goldschmidt in Berlin habilitation , was from 1936 to 1956 Professor in Cologne on art history chair. In 1938 he was elected Dean of the Philosophical Faculty, 1955–56 Rector of the University of Cologne. Kauffmann was the first art historian to be appointed to the Free University of Berlin after the Second World War , where he taught from 1957 to 1964. Günther Binding , Matthias Winner , Detlef Heikamp and Martin Warnke were among his students.

Hans Kauffmann was the son of Friedrich Kauffmann , professor of German philology in Kiel. His son Georg Kauffmann was also an art historian.
