Günther Binding

Günther Binding (* 6. March 1936 in Koblenz ) is a German art historian and emeritus professor of art history and urban conservation at the University of Cologne .

Life

Günther Binding, brother of the later sculptor Wolfgang Binding and uncle of the painter Stephanie Binding , attended elementary schools in Hildesheim and Arnsberg and graduated from high school in 1955 at the Apostelgymnasium in Cologne . After three semesters, he studied art history at the University of Cologne, architecture at the TH Aachen and later art history , history and archeology in Bonn . In 1959 he was accepted into the German National Academic Foundation's program to promote talented students . After graduating in 1960, he became a Dr.-Ing. In 1962 with Willy Weyres . PhD ; his dissertation was on the Munzenberg Castle in Wetterau . 1963 followed by the doctorate with Herbert von Eine in Bonn to the Dr. phil. with the work Die Pfalz Kaiser Friedrich Barbarossas in Gelnhausen and the early Staufer architecture in the Rhine-Main area . In the meantime he worked as an architect, first with Wilhelm Riphahn at the time of his construction of the Wi-So wing of Cologne University. This was followed by freelance work until 1964: houses, excavations and restorations in Hessen.

From 1964 to 1970, as head of the Niederrhein district office, Binding was in charge of excavations at the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn . 1966–1969 teaching position for building research at the University of Cologne. In 1969 he completed his habilitation with the thesis Burg und Stift Elten on the Lower Rhine at the University of Cologne and was appointed scientific councilor and professor there in 1970 . Since 1974 he has been a full professor for art history and urban preservation, director of the Art History Institute with the department of architectural history.

In his main research area, the building history of the Middle Ages, the standardization of the technical language is his special concern. His work Architectural Forms , published in 1980, is a standard work on the description of architecture.

At the University of Cologne he held the office of Dean of the Philosophical Faculty from 1979 to 1981 and that of Rector from 1981 to 1983 , followed by the usual time as Vice-Rector . From 1982 to 1984 he was Vice President of the West German Rectors' Conference .

In 2007, the City of Cologne appointed Binding to the Scientific Advisory Board on the Archaeological Zone in Cologne . In a dispute with the project manager Sven Schütte , Binding resigned in March 2008.

Since 1999 he has been a corresponding member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig, since 2002 a corresponding and 2005 full member of the scientific society at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main .

Günther Binding retired on March 31, 2001.

Günther Binding is married, has three children and lives in Bergisch Gladbach.
