Udo Mainzer (born July 3, 1945 in Witterda , Thuringia ) is a German art historian and monument conservator , he was director of the LVR Office for Monument Preservation in the Rhineland and state curator of the Rhineland Regional Council (LVR) until September 2011 .

Career

Udo Mainzer studied history , art history and archeology at the University of Cologne from 1968 and received his doctorate there in 1973 with Günther Binding with a dissertation on city gates in the Rhineland . Since 1976 lecturer for art history and monument preservation at the Philosophical Faculty there, he was appointed honorary professor in 1983.

After completing his studies, Udo Mainzer worked as deputy bishopric curator of the Trier bishopric and then as district curator in Westphalia-Lippe . In 1979 he was appointed state curator of the Rhineland , initially in Bonn and from 1985 in the Brauweiler Abbey in Brauweiler . In his last years of service (at least since 2008) he was the longest-serving state curator in Germany.

Udo Mainzer is married and lives in Bonn .

Honors and honorary positions

In 1998 Udo Mainzer received the Medal of Honor from the Cologne University of Applied Sciences and in 2004 the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland . He is a member of the German Academy for Urban Development and State Planning , Chairman of the Advisory Board of the baukunst-nrw project and, in 2002, was a member of the founding group for the establishment of the Federal Building Culture Foundation . Udo Mainzer is the author and editor of over 250 articles, books and specialist publication series on the preservation of monuments , monument protection and the history of architecture .

Udo Mainzer has been a member of the board of trustees of the Cologne Cathedral Foundation since 2011 .
