Stephanie Binding (* 1978 in Aachen ) is a German sculptor , graphic artist and painter . She lives and works in Kettenis near Eupen in East Belgium , where she has set up a studio that is part of the "Art Route Weser-Göhl".

Live and act

The daughter of the Aachen sculptor Wolfgang Binding and niece of the art historian Günther Binding began studying architecture at RWTH Aachen University from 1999 to 2000 after graduating from high school in 1998 . She then moved to the University of the Arts in Bremen , where she studied sculpture in Bernd Altenstein's class , and graduated in 2007 with a diploma. She then took a place in Altenstein's master class for a year. In the meantime, in 2005/2006, with the help of an Erasmus grant, Binding supplemented her subjects in the master class for graphics and printmaking techniques by Gunter Damisch at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna .

After completing her studies, Binding received a position as an artistic assistant at the Chair for Artistic Design at RWTH Aachen University, which has been suspended since 2014 due to her parental leave. In addition, she continues to give courses at the "Academy for Craft Design Gut Rosenberg of the Aachen Chamber of Crafts ", at the Bleiberger Factory educational facility and at the Ramírez-Máro-Institute in Hauset .

Works (selection)

Stephanie Binding's works are mainly divided into four areas: painting, drawings and watercolors, etchings and sculptures. Above all, individual people or smaller groups of people play a special role in a wide variety of everyday situations. Her figures are often only study or portrait-like, mostly abstractly with a certain amount of subtle humor and with color and contrast merge into an environment in delicate tones and mostly in the same color spectrum. Likewise, Binding's cityscapes are rather shadowy and often characterized by a rather dark and pensive mood as well as colors and diffuse light flowing into one another.

Her sculptures, also predominantly depictions of individuals, rarely two to three, are reminiscent of her father's numerous animal sculptures in terms of style and structure. Smaller accessories such as umbrellas, suitcases, seats or other objects, and sometimes animals, are discreet, but still give the sculpture a certain sense of the situation.

With her art objects, Binding has so far been represented at numerous solo and group exhibitions in well-known domestic and foreign galleries, whereby, due to her contacts from her Austrian studies, she was invited particularly often by the Neuhauser Kunstmühle in Salzburg.

Some of her works were popular for the design of public space and so far she has equipped the Morgenstern Museum in Bremerhaven with a group of figures, the quay wall in Vegesack with a tondo on the Odyssey and the Cologne City Hall with two facade figures , where her father had already worked on the in 1992 Also involved in making two figures for the town hall tower. Most recently, Binding made the sculpture “Pillory” for the city of Monschau , which was erected in the Laufenstrasse there in summer 2019.
