Georg Wenker (born February 25, 1852 in Düsseldorf , † July 17, 1911 in Marburg ) was a German linguist .

Life

Georg Wenker's parents were the art dealer Johann Gottfried Wenker and Wilhelmine Petri from Dortmund. Wenker attended high school in Düsseldorf from 1867 to 1872, where he graduated from high school. He studied in Zurich , Bonn and Marburg and received his doctorate in 1876 from the University of Tübingen with a dissertation on the subject of the shift in the end of the stem syllable in Germanic. In 1877 he became a librarian in Marburg.

From 1888 until his death, Wenker was head of the Research Institute for the German Language at the University of Marburg and founded the Linguistic Atlas of the German Empire , also known as the Wenkeratlas , from which today's Research Center German Linguistic Atlas emerged . To this end, by 1880 he put together the 40 Wenker sentences named after him today , which he had teachers from all over the German Empire translate into their local vernacular in the following years .
