Messehallen underground station
The Messehallen underground station is a stop on the Hamburg underground line U2 . The station abbreviation at the operating company Hamburger Hochbahn AG is "MH". The underground station has around 11,000 people entering and leaving the station every day (Mon-Fri, 2017).
history
The station was built as part of the inner city route of the U2 between Schlump and Berliner Tor in the 1960s. The opening took place on May 31, 1970. Until the completion of the Jungfernstieg high-speed railway junction in 1973, which enabled continuous traffic on the U2, a "U22" shuttle line between Schlump and Gänsemarkt served the Messehallen underground station.
In 2007 and 2008 the station was extensively renovated. The original design was largely retained.
Expansion and location
The Messehallen stop is roughly on the border between the districts of St. Pauli ( Karolinenviertel ) and Neustadt . It is located at a great depth, namely about 26 meters below ground level. The eponymous halls of the Hamburger Messe are a little north of the train station.
The trains stop in two side-by-side platform tubes with a diameter of seven meters each, which are connected to one another via several openings. The same construction can be found at the neighboring Gänsemarkt stop. To make it easier to differentiate, the tube in the exhibition halls has been given a green color stripe, while Gänsemarkt has been given an orange one.
There are entrances at both ends of the tubes; they are mainly designed as escalators and each lead to mezzanine floors. The station can be reached barrier-free via an inclined elevator to the northern end of the platform.
The distance to the Schlump station is comparatively large at around 1.1 kilometers for an underground line near the city center. The Gänsemarkt stop is only about 700 meters away.
