The Metro Station Joachim-Mähl road is a tunnel station of the Hamburg subway - U2 in the district Niendorf . The station abbreviation of the operating company Hamburger Hochbahn is "JM". In 2019, the stop had around 2,500 users daily (Mon-Fri).

history

In 1984 construction began to extend the new line from Hagenbeck's zoo to Niendorf Markt , which opened on June 1, 1985, further north of Niendorf. This last section of this route was actually supposed to be completed in 1987, but complaints from residents and problems with a high groundwater level made the work take four years longer.

On March 9, 1991, the line and with it the Joachim-Mähl-Straße underground station were officially opened by the First Mayor Henning Voscherau and in the presence of Senators Wilhelm Rahlfs and Eugen Wagner .

Joachim-Mähl-Straße is named after the poet Joachim Mähl , who came from Hamburg-Niendorf .

investment

Like the entire section to Niendorf Nord , the underground station is located under Paul-Sorge-Straße. At the intersection with Joachim-Mähl-Straße and Johannkamp, two flights of stairs lead to a lobby with ticket machines and passenger information on a mezzanine level, which is located on the north side of the underground station and from which stairs lead to the side platforms. The barrier-free expansion began in 2016 and was completed in July 2019. For the expansion, the platform was raised, a guidance system was installed and two new elevators were built at the southern end of the platform. The platform in the direction of Niendorf Nord also received a second access with a staircase at the south end as part of the renovations.

While the lobby is still mainly yellow, the actual station area is designed with light blue, grass green and yellow tiles and ends with a lower row of brown tiles. A simple depiction of farmhouses and a relief by Joachim Mähl with life data can be seen on the stairs to the platforms .

Like all subway stations in Niendorf, this is a "multi-purpose structure", ie also a bunker for up to 1080 people that can be sealed off with steel gates. Two trains can be parked here in times of crisis. To make it easier to get from one train to the other, there is a narrow base between the tracks that is slightly flatter than the side platforms.

The distance to the Niendorf Markt stop is 900 meters and to Schippelsweg 825 meters.

Connection

The Joachim-Mähl-Straße underground station is served every 10 minutes during the day. In continuous night traffic on the nights from Friday to Saturday as well as before Sundays and public holidays, the station is operated every 20 minutes. There is no transition to other public transport.
