The Metro Station Legienstraße is a station of the subway - U2 and the line U4 in Hamburg district of Horn in the district of Hamburg-Mitte . The widely spaced side platforms are a specialty.

history

Legienstrasse underground station opened on September 24, 1967. For two years, until the opening of the extended line to Billstedt on September 28, 1969, it was the eastern terminus of the U3 line . The originally planned name of the station was "Vierbergen", as this street was the only access until 2015. However, the naming was then after the union leader Carl Legien , which led to a debate about the neutrality of the naming of public areas in the Hamburg citizenship , the state parliament.

The U2 line has been running on this branch since the line branch exchange in 2009, and the U4 line since 2012.

The stop has been made barrier-free since autumn 2015 . The platforms were also given access with elevators on the east side of the underground station.

Construction and operation

The underground station is located in the same open cut as the Billstedt underground station , directly behind the tunnel mouth in the direction of Horner Rennbahn , on which the access system is built. A depot for the maintenance of the trains was planned on the area between the tracks during the construction of the subway , which was not built. Its construction has been under construction since 2016, as the line branch swap between U2 and U3 at Berliner Tor in 2009 and the newly established line U4 in 2012 mean that two lines are no longer at a depot and thus supply trips for maintenance in the existing workshops in Barmbek and Farmsen require.

For many years the track-free area was covered with gravel . In the further course of the cut in the direction of Billstedt, longer sidings followed, which were dismantled a few years ago due to lack of use, so that the open space increased. For a few years, the elevated railway refrained from clearing , which is why a birch- wooded area had formed between the tracks.

Another special feature is the glass dispatch pulpit between the tracks above the tunnel entrances. This has not been used since the introduction of self-handling . The route tunnel in the direction of the Horner Rennbahn is also initially very wide because it was intended as an access route for the planned workshop.

In its function as the terminus, only one platform of the station was used from 1967 to 1969. The track change then took place in the tunnel in the direction of Horner Rennbahn.
