history

The station was built as part of the inner city route of the U2 diameter line between Schlump and Berliner Tor at the end of the 1960s. As with the neighboring Messehallen station, the opening took place on May 31, 1970. Until the completion of the Jungfernstieg subway junction in 1973, which enabled through traffic to Berliner Tor, the provisional U22 line from Schlump ended here. Then Gänsemarkt was served continuously by the U2 line.

Expansion and location

The Gänsemarkt stop is about 25 meters below the Valentinskamp street between Gänsemarkt and Caffamacherreihe in Hamburg's Neustadt district and is one of the deepest underground stations in Hamburg. The trains stop in each direction in a platform tube with a diameter of seven meters, which are connected to one another via several openings. The same construction can be found at the north-western neighboring stop Messehallen . To distinguish them, the exhibition halls have been given a green color stripe, while Gänsemarkt has a red one. The platforms are about 125 meters long and about 3.5 meters wide.

There are escalators at both ends of the tubes , each leading to the mezzanine floors one or two lower levels. The surface can be reached from these via further connections. There is an elevator on the east side .

The station abbreviation of Hamburger Hochbahn AG for Gänsemarkt is "GM". The distance to the Messehallen station is around 700 meters, and it is around 600 meters to Jungfernstieg.
