Niendorf Markt underground station
The Metro Station Niendorf Markt is a tunnel station of the Hamburg subway - U2 in the district Niendorf . In contrast to the name in the timetable of the Hamburger Hochbahn and the route network map, there are also signs in the station with the spelling “Niendorf-Markt”. The station abbreviation of the operating company Hamburger Hochbahn is "NM". The underground station is used by around 19,800 passengers getting on and off every day (Mon-Fri, 2017).
history
Hamburg's tram network has been dismantled since 1955 , until the last route, line 2 through Niendorf, was shut down on October 1, 1978. As a replacement for the tram, Niendorf demanded the construction of an underground line. Since no financial means were available for a route from Stephansplatz via the Grindelviertel , then the Hoheluftchaussee and the route of the tram to Lokstedt , an extension of the Eimsbüttel route from Hagenbeck's zoo was realized.
Almost a year after the tram was switched to bus operation, construction of the underground began on July 7, 1979. At the same time, it was decided that Niendorf Markt should not be the end of the extension, but that the underground should go through a second phase of construction New development areas of Niendorf-Nord should be extended. At the previous terminus at Hagenbecks Tierpark, the parking facility was converted for the continuation, which, for environmental reasons, took place entirely as a tunnel from there.
On November 5, 1984 a museum car with politicians and press people reached the Niendorf Markt underground station. The train was pulled by a diesel locomotive because the line had not yet been electrified. The public release took place on June 1, 1985. The completion of the second construction phase after Niendorf Nord took until March 9, 1991, so that Niendorf Markt was the northern terminus of the U2 for almost six years.
investment
The subway station is located under the Tibarg shopping street , which was converted into a pedestrian zone when the station was built. There are entrances at both ends of the central platform, the south-western entrance leading to the bus station has a mezzanine level with ticket machines and a newspaper kiosk. An elevator , which, like the north-eastern entrance, directly connects the street surface and the platform, ensures barrier-free access.
The floor of the central platform consists of brown mottled tiles, which are set off in a rust color to the platform edge. Supporting pillars and the lower two thirds of the walls are clad with brown bricks, the rest and the tunnel ceiling are painted white. In the middle of the underground station there is an old photo of the tram on both sides of the tunnel wall.
There is a sweeping track to the northeast of the platform, and a switch system to the southwest to switch to the other track.
Due to its construction time during the Cold War , the underground station is a "multi-purpose structure", i.e. also a bunker for up to 3300 people that can be sealed off with steel gates. The sweeping track is included in this bunker area.
Connection
The Niendorf Markt underground station is served every 5 minutes during the day (except on Sundays), with every second train going to the city center at times ending or using here; Only in rush hour traffic do the trains run every five minutes to the terminus Niendorf Nord. During the remaining times, the station is operated every 10 or 20 minutes. In continuous night traffic on the nights from Friday to Saturday as well as before Sundays and public holidays, the U2 runs every 20 minutes.
At the bus station there is a transition to the Metrobus lines 23 (via Groß Borstel to Billstedt ), 24 (via Langenhorn to Rahlstedt ) and 5 (to Schnelsen or on the route of the former tram via Lokstedt to downtown Hamburg ). There is also a connection to the city bus routes 191 (to Schnelsen Nord or via the Krohnstiegtunnel to Garstedt) and 391 (to Hagenbecks Tierpark) as well as to the night bus route 604 (to Niendorf Ost or on the route of line 5 to the Rathausmarkt).
