The Schlump Underground Station is a major hub in the west of Hamburg subway -Netzes. It is located in the Eimsbüttel district of the Hamburg-Eimsbüttel district in close proximity to parts of the Hamburg University and is served by the U2 and U3 underground lines. The station code is SL. In 2017, around 65,000 passengers got on or off the trains every day (Mon-Fri).

The underground station is a tower station on two levels under the crossing Schäferkampsallee-Schröderstiftstraße / Kleiner Schäferkamp-Beim Schlump .

Schlump is one of the few stops on the Hamburg subway that has an above-ground access hall. Horst Sandtmann designed a square glass hall around 1965. The grid ceiling is supported by eight external steel supports, while the glass windows have no load-bearing function. Inside the hall there are four flights of stairs and two elevators to the U3 platforms; Another elevator connects the western U3 platform with the U2 platform below. The entrance to the station is facing away from the intersection on the north side of the hall and has a small row of shops. Behind the row of shops is the open cut of the U3 and a signal box .

In the first low level (level -1) there are two platforms with three tracks for the U3 ring line (tracks 1 to 3). The two outer tracks are normally used for continuous traffic in the direction of Kellinghusenstraße or Sternschanze , while the middle track is used for loading and unloading repeater trains. The so-called Moorkamp curve , which connects the U3 with the U2 (in the direction of Christ Church ) as a service track, goes from this track north of the stop . This section, which has only been a single-track section since 1965, was part of the Eimsbüttel branch of the elevated railway and was served by the U2 line until 1973 as scheduled. Basically there has been no public passenger traffic on the track since then. Nevertheless, there were rare exceptions: In 1989 the port birthday party was expected to be so popular that amplifier trains were used as U2 / U3 from Niendorf to the jetties . This company practice was repeated on New Year's Eve 1989/90. In addition, there were several public trips with the new generation of “DT5” railcars on this track when the DT5 was on a test schedule. On the occasion of the Traffic History Day 2009, there were semi-public trips on this track.

In the second low level (level –2) is the central platform of the U2 (tracks 4 and 5), which runs approximately at a 45 ° angle to the tracks of the U3. Here are the two direction tracks towards the Christ Church and the exhibition halls . The U2 platform can only be reached via the U3 platform using fixed stairs, escalators and lifts .

All platforms, including those on the U3 level, are at least 120 meters long and therefore suitable for 8 or 9-car trains.

history

Schlump underground station (1912)

As part of the ring line, the Schlump stop was opened on May 25, 1912. Even then, the station had a central platform and an external side platform with a total of three tracks. However, the station was then - unlike today - completely in the brick cut. At the south end of the station were the stairs that lead into a small vestibule. The charming building was created according to plans by Emil Schaudt . The two platforms were then only 67 meters long, which was sufficient in the first few years of operation. From June 1, 1913, shuttle trains also drove from here to the Christ Church, which opened the first section of the Eimsbüttler branch. The shuttle service was switched to a circulating service when the remaining line to Hellkamp was completed on May 23, 1914, but the trains always ended at Schlump on the middle track. It was only from 1918 that there were occasional onward trains to Rothenburgsort or, after the war, to Barmbek .

In 1926/27 the two platforms were lengthened slightly to the north so that 6-car trains could now be used. No other alterations from the pre-war period have survived. The station building was already damaged in 1941 . Ultimately, at the end of the war there was only one torso left. In order to carry out an orderly operation, the building was first given a temporary roof, which architecturally distorted the building. So it seemed clear that the elevated railway would soon completely renew this station.

In 1952, Hans Loop designed a representative and, with its five building pillars and a flying roof, quite monumental new building, which replaced the ruins by May 1953. Inside the building, attention was paid to functionality, but the stairs leading to the platforms were given curved and therefore very elegant roofs. In addition, a simple bridge was built at the northern end of the two platforms, over which the transfer passengers could change platforms directly.

This station building was only preserved for 12 years: Since 1962, the City of Hamburg has been building the “Diameter Line” project, an underground line from Billstedt to Stellingen in the sense of today's U2. The city center is to be crossed directly. According to the plan, Schlump station should now be transformed from a branching station to a crossing station . Geographically, it was necessary to build the new underground station in the course of Schäferkampsallee. Unfortunately, the existing station building was in the way of the renovation, so it was decided to demolish the building. Since the building was no longer an obstacle in terms of planning, the station could be completely rebuilt: In 1966 the U3 tunnel south of the intersection was opened to create a temporary station. When this stop went into operation, the old station could be demolished. First of all, the new underground platform was expanded, then two new platforms were built in place of the old platform area, which were given the now common building length of 120 meters. The concrete ceiling was new, covering most of the new platform area and serving as the foundation for the new above-ground Sandtmann hall.

The renovation was completed in May 1968, the new Schlump station was able to go back into operation, although the underground platform initially remained closed and was hidden behind wooden walls. In terms of operations, nothing had changed at first: the U2 and U3 lines, now known as the U2 and U3, continued to arrive at Schlump from the Sternschanze direction. The U3 continues to Barmbek, while the U2 continues over the Moorkamp curve to Hagenbeck's zoo .

The underground platform was opened on May 31, 1970: First, the U22 went there in a single-track shuttle service towards Gänsemarkt . When the gap in the network on Jungfernstieg was closed, the subway network was redesigned: The U2 disappeared from the edge of the harbor and now drove over the new diameter line and replaced the interim line U22 here on Schlump. At the same time, the new route under Schäferkampsallee in the direction of Christ Church went into operation, which at the same time meant that the Moorkamp curve could be removed from regular service.

In the 1990s , Schlump received elevators and partially raised platforms, making the station barrier-free . In 2011 the roof of the access hall was renewed.

Connection

At Schlump underground station there is a transition to various bus lines, including Metrobus lines 4 (via Eimsbüttel to Eidelstedt or downtown Hamburg ) and 15 (via Altona to Klein Flottbek and Othmarschen or to Alsterchaussee). During the nightly shutdown of the subway, the night bus line 603 runs every 30 minutes. A StadtRAD Hamburg station is in front of the underground station.
