“Millerntor” underground station around 1913
platform

The subway station St. Pauli is a stop of the Hamburg subway - U3 . It is located under Millerntorplatz in the eponymous district east of the Reeperbahn . The stop is of particular importance in the arrival and departure traffic for events in the Millerntor Stadium and on the Heiligengeistfeld ( Hamburg Cathedral ). The underground station has a 90-meter-long central platform at a single depth. Entrances are at both ends of the platform. The station is considered barrier-free .

history

The station was planned and built from 1910 by the Berlin architect Johann Emil Schaudt . It was opened as Millerntor station on May 25, 1912 and functioned as a terminus for a good month - until the elevated railway ring was fully operational on June 29, 1912. To do this, he has a single-track sweeping system north of the platform. The first renovation took place in 1926/27 when the platform was expanded from 67 meters to 90 meters in length. This conversion was very complex, as the switch system of the sweeping track, located north of the platform, had to be relocated a little to the north and some slab props had to be relocated. Since then, 6-wagon trains can be used instead of 4-wagon trains, which was urgently needed since the mid-1920s at the latest. In 1935 the station was renamed from “Millerntor” to “St. Pauli ”, because the name of the district was much better known beyond Hamburg.

During the Second World War , the train service was often interrupted, so that there was a shutdown here. The longest and last break in operation was from March to September 1945. The reason was 16 ceiling breaches under the Heiligengeistfeld alone. After the rubble had been removed, the trains could run again, if only to St. Pauli. It was not until March 11, 1946, that the line that continued over Landungsbrücken to the main train station could be put back into operation.

In the 1960s, the access system was supplemented by ticket machines , the barrier system was later completely removed. An extensive renovation took place in 1979. The so far only access at the south end was completely redesigned (including the counter room for ticket sales at the conductors and the various single-price ticket machines removed) and an escalator (upwards) was installed there, the platform hall renovated and the wall tiles renewed.

In 1999 there was a further renovation, in which the "booth" of the stop attendant with the handling facilities and the signal box for the sweeping track, which was no longer in use, was removed from the platform. The sales kiosk on the platform was enlarged and redesigned. At the northern end of the platform, the second access towards Glacischaussee / Heiligengeistfeld was built. The walls behind the tracks were clad with panels made of sheet metal. During the renovation, an original tiled wall from 1912 was discovered in the vestibule , which was renovated and preserved. The old, southern entrance received the arched weather protection roof made of metal and glass and an elevator .

Connection

There is a transition to several bus routes at the St. Pauli underground station. Until September 1967 it was possible to change to the tram here . Most recently, this was line 14, which began here and ran via Eppendorf and Winterhude to Veddel. The trams in the Reeperbahn, on the other hand, were already closed in May 1965 (last line 6 from St. Pauli, Hein-Hoyer-Straße via Rathausmarkt, Lange Reihe, Mundsburger Brücke and Barmbek to Ohlsdorf). The connection through the Reeperbahn to Altona, which disappeared in May 1959 (at that time lines 6 and 7), is even further back.
