The Hamburg station Landungsbrücken is an important transport hub in Hamburg-St. Pauli . It is a transfer station between the U-Bahn and S-Bahn , which also has a bus and a ferry connection. There used to be a tram connection . The underground station is one of the oldest in Hamburg and is a listed building. Around 29,000 people get on and off here every day.

From 1906 the first line of the Hamburg U-Bahn was built, also known as the elevated railway. It was led around downtown Hamburg in a ring. A station with side platforms was built on the slope of the Stintfangs near the eponymous Landungsbrücken. It was designed by the architects Johann Emil Schaudt and Walter Puritz . The station was designed to be half-open: the western part is covered with a concrete slab, while the eastern part is open.

The station went into operation initially under the name Hafentor together with the Millerntor (today St. Pauli ) - Rathausmarkt (today Rathaus ) section as the last section of the elevated railway ring on June 29, 1912. The elevated railway station initially had a distinctive tower at the entrance, which was designed by Johann Emil Schaudt. It was damaged in World War II and demolished in 1959 when the entire station was modernized. In 1920 the station was renamed Landungsbrücken.

The eastern stairway access to the underground station from 1923 remained closed until 1924 due to a lack of personnel at the elevated railway. The design for the brick building with 62-step staircases that lead to the subway platforms on both sides also comes from Walter Puritz.

During the modernization, the entrance with a copper roof was connected to the pier with a wide pedestrian bridge and a 32-step staircase according to plans by Hans LM Loop and Fritz Trautwein . The bridge over the six-lane road near the St. Pauli Landungsbrücken was needed in order to cope with the high number of passengers at this subway station when shift changes in the port were made into the 1960s. A narrower staircase was also built on the opposite side of the street. Inside the building, two further staircases, each with 27 steps, lead to the two underground platforms. The northerly of these stairs to the direction of travel to St. Pauli is equipped with an escalator .

In 1971, considerable renovations took place again when the tunnel of the City-S-Bahn was built under the Stintfang. After the construction work was completed, the western entrance hall as the main entrance to the subway in the rear area also offered access to the underground S-Bahn platform via an eight-step companionway and then on both sides of this landing with escalators and downhill stairwells. The new transfer station was opened on June 1, 1975.

The renovation and barrier-free conversion of the subway station began in May 2019. As a result, no trains stopped at the station for several months. The renovation was carried out in cooperation with the monument protection office . The aim was to “preserve the entire old structure, consisting of steel supports, steel trusses and the surfaces.” In order to rebuild the platforms, which are situated in a strongly curved position, barrier-free, so-called “gap fillers” were installed at the platform edges as before in the Klosterstern stop "), Consisting of flexible plastic slats, which reduce the distance between the train and the platform edge. Alternatives to this would have been an at least partial demolition and new construction of the viaduct or a relocation of the station to the straight stretch in the direction of baumall - options that had also been discussed previously.

The addition of elevators to the subway platform on its eastern stairway is under construction. A guidance system for people with visual impairments was also installed and the platforms were raised. Trains have passed through the station again since September 9, 2019. However, the opening of the underground station itself was delayed until December 16, 2019, as major damage to the building fabric was discovered during construction work under the surfaces. Many different building materials had been used in previous renovations.

The Landungsbrücken S-Bahn station has been in operation since June 1, 1975 as a S-Bahn station and part of the tunnel route from the main station to Altona ( City S-Bahn ).

Initially it was a terminus, from here the S10 ran on its way via Jungfernstieg and the main train station to Barmbek. From April 21, 1979, instead of the S10, the S1 ran from Wedel via Altona to Poppenbüttel. The routing of the S1 has now been replaced by the newly established S11. The earlier route of the tram served as a donkey bridge: the S1 runs similar to the earlier tram line 1 over Landungsbrücken, the S11 as earlier the 11 over Holstenstrasse.

The S-Bahn area was initially designed with blue and yellow tiles, the thick columns had tiled anchor motifs by Hans-Günther Baass , and the back track walls had wave motifs. In later years, more maritime pictures were also attached to free billboards behind the tracks.

On September 30, 1984, a class 471 S-Bahn car burned down in the station , which led to an initial renovation, especially of the S-Bahn area. In March 2018, as with the other stations of the City Tunnel, the complete redesign of the S-Bahn began. First, the tiles on the walls behind the tracks were knocked off and the walls and ceilings above the tracks were painted black. The platform floor and the distribution levels were newly tiled. In October 2019, new panels were installed on the back track walls and the walls on the stairs from the platform to the distribution level were redesigned. One of the anchor motifs from the pillars, which is now also covered by cladding, is to be retained in the entrance area in future.

The S-Bahn station has the main entrance through the station structure of the U-Bahn, but has another exit at the east end of the platform to the street Eichholz or Hafentor. For some years now, this exit has also had an inclined elevator from street level to the suburban train platform below.

Due to its former function as a terminus, the station still has a platform change to the east of the station. In addition, unlike the other stops in the city tunnel, where these facilities that have not been regularly used for a long time have been removed since 2018, it also has additional dispatch cabins for local supervision , which were modernized in 2019 and are used at major events ( port birthday , Hamburg Cruise Days ) can come.
