The Metro Station Mönckebergstraße is one stop of the Hamburg subway - U3 right in the center of Hamburg, which, 1912-1950 Barkhof said. The abbreviation for the Hamburger Hochbahn is MO .

construction

The stop is at a simple depth ( sub-paved railway ) directly under the eponymous Mönckebergstraße , about halfway between Rathausmarkt and Hamburg Central Station. The two entrances are at the western end of the two side platforms and lead, at right angles to the platforms, directly onto Mönckebergstraße. The extension of the platforms to about 90 meters in length to the east in 1926/1927 allowed 6-car trains to stop instead of the 4-car trains that were previously possible. Since the stop does not have a second exit, it is equipped with a sprinkler system. An extension to a platform length of 120 meters was considered in the 1950s and 1960s, but was discarded due to expected problems with the renovation. Additional eastern entrances were never planned.

history

The Mönckebergstraße station was built as part of the first Hamburg underground line (the ring line ) and opened on March 1, 1912. At that time it was called Barkhof . During the Second World War , the facility was badly damaged and could not be reopened to passenger traffic until June 1, 1950. One month later, on July 1, 1950, the station was renamed Mönckebergstrasse. In the following years it was renovated and rebuilt several times, which also had an impact on the appearance, especially the wall tiling. The two previously open access systems were given a more modern structure at street level around 1968, into each of which a sausage snack shop was integrated. Due to their popularity and very good use, these still exist today. Around 2000 these kiosks were replaced by new buildings, just as the entire stop was modernized. Since then, one of the basalt lava columns used in the construction in 1911/1912 has been exhibited behind glass with an explanatory board at the northern exit .
