Hamburg Messe und Congress has around 87,000 square meters of exhibition space in eleven halls. Around 40 own and guest events with around 15,000 exhibitors and around 700,000 visitors take place on the site every year.

The event portfolio includes international trade fairs, popular consumer fairs as well as sales events and company meetings. Hamburg Messe und Congress is itself responsible for the organization of around 15 events, while at others it is co-organizer or offers guest organizers other extensive services in addition to renting the hall space.

The trade fair company is a member of the Association of Large-Scale German Trade Fairs . V. and ranked 9th in Germany in terms of sales behind Messe Frankfurt , Messe München , Messe Berlin , KölnMesse , Messe Nürnberg , Deutsche Messe , Messe Düsseldorf and Messe Stuttgart .

The exhibition grounds / The "New Hamburg Fair"

In 2004, the expansion of the Hamburg exhibition center from the former 65,000 m² plus 8,500 m² outdoor area to a total of around 87,000 m² plus 10,000 m² outdoor area (both gross figures). The extensive construction project entitled “New Hamburg Fair” with a financial volume of EUR 370 million was completed in September 2008.

In order to create space for the new halls B5, B6 (which with around 13,000 m² gross area became the largest of the new halls) and B7, the old halls 1–8 were demolished. The existing halls 9-12 were renamed and are now called B1-B4. With the completion of Hall B7, the exhibition grounds along Karolinenstrasse will have a uniform appearance. The "New Hamburg Fair" construction project was thus completed.

Halls A1 – A4 on the new exhibition grounds had already been completed. The new exhibition center is located west of Karolinenstrasse, directly next to the Hamburg television tower , one of the landmarks of the Hanseatic city , connected to the B site by a pedestrian bridge .

The Halls B are thus located on the old, the Halls A on the new fairgrounds.

The eastern confluence of Lagerstraße and Karolinenstraße had to be swiveled to the south for the construction of the new exhibition center in 2004/2005. In 2006 the new multi-storey car park at Hamburg Messe, with a capacity of around 900 parking spaces, was opened and is also located in the newly built northwest section.

Both the exhibition halls and the CCH border the Planten un Blomen park and are connected by a covered path.

Exhibition grounds before 2004

With the trade fair expansion, almost the entire exhibition grounds were renewed or even expanded. This description deals with the old exhibition grounds in the triangle St. Petersburger Strasse, Karolinenstrasse and Holstenglacis / Bei den Kirchhöfe. In the course of the renovation work, the old halls were renamed and their number was preceded by a letter in order to better identify the location on the old or the new site.

Only the southern entrance hall at the Messehallen stop and the eastern entrance hall with the exhibition tower on the exhibition hallway and the former halls 9, 10, 11 and 12 were retained during the renovation. The remaining, partly two-story halls were demolished. The previous numbering began with Hall 1 right next to the East Entrance and continued clockwise to Hall 7, with Hall 4 directly connecting to the South Entrance Hall. In the corridor between Halls 9 and 7 there was (even some time after the start of construction) an entrance to the exhibition grounds, which was replaced by the central entrance on the new site.

Hall 8 could be seen as a special feature. It was located at the transition between Halls 9 and 10 and, with the exception of the roof, which was up to 24 meters high, was completely glazed like a greenhouse. These special dimensions made it possible to set up special exhibits such as an erected hot air balloon. After all, there was a particularly simple design long before today's pedestrian bridge, which connected Hall 9 with an outdoor parking lot, which was located south of the former location of Lagerstraße.

The signs within the exhibition grounds changed gradually during the renovation. While Hall A1 already had the new signposts in black and white when it opened for Internorga 2006, the old signs were still in all halls at the same time (red background, the content of the signs surrounded by a thin white frame, white inscriptions in bold).

Finally, the facade of Hall 9 / B1 facing Karolinenstrasse / Messeplatz was adapted to the new look of the other halls, whereby the massive wall was replaced by a glass facade with escalators and the final connection to the pedestrian bridge. As part of this construction work, a triangular metal tower that stood at the corner of Karolinenstrasse / Messeplatz and St. Petersburger Strasse, on which the next trade fairs were always displayed by means of metal panels, also disappeared.

The regular trade fairs and consumer exhibitions that are held on the Hamburg Messe site include:

Congress Center Hamburg (CCH)

Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH operated the CCH until the end of 2016. Up until the end of 2016, the CCH hosted an average of around 250 events with around 300,000 participants, including national and international congresses, concerts and annual general meetings. Since 2017 the CCH has been renovated by the owner CCH Immobilien GmbH & Co. KG, for which costs of 194 million euros have been estimated. In advance it turned out that the congress center is contaminated with pollutants, which should be removed in the course of the renovation. The reopening is planned for 2020.
