history

In 1956, the delegates of the four marine engineering associations founded the umbrella organization Vereinigung Deutscher Schiffsingenieure (VDSI) in Hamburg . Since then, all of the West German ship engineers' associations and, from 1990, the Association of Ship Engineers zu Rostock e. V., member of the VDSI.

An annual meeting of the Flensburg Association in 1958 resulted in a “Ship Engineer's Day” organized by the VDSI every 2 to 3 years at different locations. The next joint event was linked to a specialist exhibition in Flensburg in 1961. The exhibition focused on the main topics

On May 22nd, 1963, the VDSI organized the “Ship Engineer's Day” as a conference with a combined exhibition for the first time in Hamburg. The accompanying exhibition “Ship and Machine” took place in Hall B of the exhibition grounds and ended on May 25, 1963. This year is considered to be the year of the later SMM.

The maritime industry prospered during the economic miracle . The order situation of the shipyards and the supplier industry was good, the shipping companies bought ships and the port city of Hamburg with its numerous shipyards, ship owners and shipbuilding suppliers offered the right environment and diverse economic opportunities. There were also training centers in Hamburg that offered maritime vocational training and studies to become a ship officer and ship engineer . Therefore, the exhibition was positively received and supported by the shipbuilding and supplier industry, the maritime and ship engineering schools, the Chamber of Industry and Commerce and the shipowners . In the following years the exhibition developed into the world's largest shipbuilding fair “Ship, Machine, Marine Technology”, or SMM for short.

International spin-offs

Since 2009, Hamburg Messe has been organizing international offshoots of the SMM together with local partners. INMEX SMM India takes place every two years in Mumbai. The next date for the event is from 3 to 5 October 2017.

The SMM Istanbul is also held as a conference fair every two years. The 2016 event did not take place due to the tense political situation in the region and the changing Turkish shipbuilding market.
